Was Anyone Of Drinking Age As Shocked As I Was...
when I found out that they were serving/selling "Blazeweiser" at "Lesion" Field for a UAB Football game? When did this kick in and is it temporary or the norm from here on out? Out of the countless times I'd set foot in that place when I reached legal 04-cheers age, it had dawned on me as I was purchasing a beer in the stadium, that it was the very first one I had ever bought in LF...I was 04-jawdrop by the mere fact that alcohol sales were being allowed for Blazers games there...Who does the beer-drinking populace of Blazer Nation have to thank for this, and will it carry over into basketball season?

Here's my guess:

UAB Adminsitration in the past (previous presidents) has said no to alcohol sales at Legion Field. Maybe Watts said yes.

I doubt we will allow it on campus at Bartow for basketball (outside of the donor areas).

How many posts before the "It can't be sold on campus" falsehood gets thrown out?

I don't know the state laws on alcohol sales, but it would not be surprising to find a state law forbidding sales at "on (state school) campus" athletic events while locations off campus may be under local control. If there are no such laws, what accounts for the absence of such beverages for sale at "on campus" events?

In regard to the NCAA (since it was mentioned), they are far too busy trying to keep the major program's millionaire boosters in line to get into something they consider to be subject to local option. Frankly, they probably could not care less if fans get roaring drunk at NCAA events as long as they don't give any of it to the "scholar-athletes" as illegal aid.

When I was on faculty at UAB, alcohol was allowed at University functions if the proper paperwork was filled out in advance. The Honors Program regularly held wine and cheese receptions for guest lecturers, and alcohol was frequently available at dinners in the Great Hall. Hell, I tapped several kegs working as the bartender for the annual Madrigal Feaste there.

However, I've been gone from the state for 17 years, so I can't speak to rules changes during that time.

Those rules are still in place. I believe the approval has to be Provost (for schools) or Vice Presidential (for non-school departments).

No idea what the rule is for selling at on-campus athletics events. I would assume not wanting to deal with the ABC hassle is part of it.

I hope they don't bring it into Bartow arena. You can get away from out of control fans at Legion Field, but not so much at Bartow arena. Plus, there have already been alcohol related incidents (Memphis 2008) at Bartow.

Football seems better suited for alcohol sales than basketball.

My quote wasn't that it can't be sold at Bartow.

I said, "I doubt we will allow it."

Maybe we will. 04-cheers

Oh, I understood that. I was just quickly expecting someone to reply and inform you (incorrectly) that it's against NCAA rules.

I was a bit surprised that the bait was taken (sort of) just 1 post later

It's really a pain in the ass to deal with, and how much money are they really going to make selling it in Bartow? Regions Field and Legion Field the city takes on the hassle of permitting and the regulatory nonsense. If Bartow seated 15,000+ and sold out every time then maybe the money would be worth it.

I dont think UAB makes any money off concessions at Legion Field or at Bartow Arena (with the possible exception of a fee from the concessionaire at Bartow for the privilege of setting up shop there for events - just a guess on this).

Even more reason not to do it at Bartow. They'd be taking on all the risk for no upside.

I was more shocked that they had it in bottles. I gave a family member a ticket to the game so to return the favor he comes back from the concession stand with beer. I couldn't believe it was in a glass bottle! Even better, he said the guy who was serving it didn't have a bottle opener and it wasn't a twist off. Bottle opener keychain saved the day. 04-cheers

Now that is a shock. All I saw was the 16oz Miller Lite & Coors Lite being hawked by the guys roaming the aisles calling, "Cold Beer, Peanuts!"

I was pleasantly surprised by the price, $5.00 I believe. I was expecting $6 or $6.50.

I'd have been even more surprised if they had a quality craft beer in a bottle for a similar price. I avoid the concession stands at Lesion if possible, but might brave the lines for a "good" beer.

As it was, I did enjoy a couple of Miller Lites, and I rarely drink light beer.

The beer and the beautiful day took some of the sting out of the lousy performance on the field, then I went to Iron City and REALLY dulled the pain. 03-drunk

Ditto on the price shock. I pay $8.50 for a Corona 16 oz and $8.00 for a Bud 16 oz at Atlanta Brave games so I thought $5 was good.

And while UAB makes nothing at Legion, they do (did) receive a percentage of concession sales at Bartow. Now that Sodexho (the campus food co.) has taken over Bartow concessions, not sure if the same deal is in place.

Damn straight! 03-lmfao I would have been fine with just one, but when UAB's defense gave FAU 40 acres and the damn mule, I had to drown my sorrows in something other than LF's stale-assed softdrinks they've had locked up since the Carter Administration.
