Anyway, I expect the first few years for GSU to be like playing Appy during their glory years (which weren't that long ago) every week (except GaSt).
We have 1 FCS opponent next year and open on the road against NCST and GT. Then a full SBC schedule. We'll have a new starting QB and our defense has to improve. I don't think we'll be 0-12, but going better than 7-5 will take a lot of GATA and a little luck.
Go Eagles! and Go SBC!
Without knowing your conference schedule, its hard to make a full prediction, but I imagine Georgia Southern will win around 4 games next year...maybe 5 depending on which league teams you draw.
For GSU fans, that might be a tough year, but in reality its puts you in perfect position to make a bowl game within a year or two of becoming fully eligible.
Four.. Maybe 5?
This is why I think some of you are in for a shock.
First OOC:
we have the Duquesne game that makes one.
NC is a very winnable game, they almost lost to Richmond last week!
The Navy game will be tooth and nail, but I believe we are going to win that one this time. Only lost 13-7 last time and I think we will be better next year than that year.
Then the GT game. The Master v/s the Student. Monken knows the GT offense in and out. But we might have a few wrinkles that PJ wont be ready for. I expect a close game that could go either way.
At the very least I think we will win one of those other OOC games and maybe two - bringing us to possible 2-2 or 3-1.
Then there is our side of the conference: Assuming they are going to go East/West. So that is USA and GAST.
That should bring us to 4-2 or possibly 5-1.
So who is left? App State? That is a 50/50 shot at worse case and that is looking better everyday.
So this becomes 4-3 or perhaps 6-1.
Then there is Troy, a team that we have more in common with than we know. I give them no better than a 50/50 shot at beating us.
so 4-4 or 7-1.
Then we come down to the draw of two West teams.
I figure they are going to stick us on the road to NMSU or Idaho in year one. Maybe even both. But if it is only one, the Eagles should win one more right there.
5-4 or 8-1.
I'm hoping we get JMU into the mix in time to get on the schedule for next year so we might go 6-4 or 9-1 on that as we have been ranked above them the last few years.
Who else? ULM? UL? AState? Two games left.
I don't know who would be easier or harder, the all three look tough.
But when I look at common opponents, I don't see any reason to believe we wont line up toe to toe with any of those three and be just as good.
Would I be shocked with a 6-6 record? A little bit. I wouldn't be shocked however to go 8-4 or even 9-3 or even 10-2!
At worse.. 7-5. Time will tell. I might be the shocked one. But show me some evidence that proves we don't look at least equal to those upper level SBC programs right now? I can't find any.
They only arguments we see presented are the struggles that other FCS programs had transitioning to the Sun Belt. But those don't hold much water because not one of them was as prepared as we are for this move, not even Troy. And Troy did pretty dang good did they not?
