03-talktothehand Yes I realize that Clemson has a good team, but Clemson is dead to me.

Thank you for letting VT out of the "most overated" doghouse. I never realized that Tennessee had moved out.

Don't get me wrong I'm a big fan of the Hokies, I just don't get how they have all that talent and consistently under-perform.

You're only as good as your weakest position. Somehow VT always seems to have a couple of positions of weakness (particularly on offense).

RE: Georgia is slowly taking over Va Tech as my most over-rated team ever
It is interesting how teams develop personalities. They don't last forever, but there are periods of time things seem like clockwork. In the past decade or so, I remember thinking this about teams (some of which are no longer true).

1. Virginia Tech starts the season with tough losses, but then come out strong in ACC play.
2. Clemson looks great and then loses games it shouldn't and finishes just outside the ACC title game.
3. USC was an absolute monster. They'd win all non-conference games and kill whomever they played in a bowl, but they'd somehow lose to one bad team in the PAC-10
4. Michigan State was a lot like Clemson. If you played them in the first half of the year they were a really tough game. If you played them at the end, after they had their annual collapse, they were easy.

Granted, it was probably only a few years that made this impression to me and then things changed, but for awhile, they all seemed true.

Possibly the most ironic post on this board ever. Nobody does less with more than Texas.

Usually FSU is in that dog house too....they start the year ranked 10 or 11 and don't end up near that by game 12.

But UT and FSU have some tough rivalries, especially FSU. Let another school play UF and UM every year.

You are right, but while UM might be down, UF is up.

FSU was overrated preseason from roughly 2002-2008 (rough estimate without looking at preseason/final polls). Basically since then i think FSU has been relatively accurately ranked. And, I mean, you can't really fault voters for voting FSU higher than they deserved based on the previous 20 years. But even in the overrated stretch, FSU was rarely/never voted top 5 or 10, despite many people thinking the contrary.

As for VT being overrated? GTFO! Everybody respects VT but VT doesn't recruit exceptionally and they almost never have legitimate national title hopes. Overrated? LMFAO. They just won 10+ games like 15 straight years and I can't think but for maybe one or two years they were preseason top 5.

03-zzz

What game did we lose last year that we shouldn't have lost?

The year before we won the ACC.

The year before that was a rebuilding year in the second full year under Swinney.

The year before that we were in Tampa playing for the ACC Championship.

Where exactly have we lost games that we shouldn't that has kept us out of the ACC Championship?

In the past 30 weeks there have been six teams ranked in all 30 polls. Alabama, LSU, Stanford, Oregon, South Carolina and Clemson. We did it without major NCAA violations, without hiring a sleezeball coach, and while finishing in the Top 10 in the APR for football every year.

Best be afraid bucknut. You've played the two major programs from South Carolina three times, lost all three and twice it resulted in you having a coaching search.

Here's 10 years to make your own assessment.

2002 - Played 1 top 10 team (#1 Miami, lost) - Preseason #16, reached #3, ended up 10-4 #18

2003 - Played 1 top 10 team (#2 Miami, won) - Preseason #9, reached #3, ended up 8-5 unranked

2004 - Played 4 top 10 teams (#1 USC, lost. #4 WVU, won. #9 Miami, won. #3 Auburn, lost) - Preseason unranked, reached #9, ended up 10-3 #10

2005 - Played 1 top 10 team (#5 Miami, lost) - Preseason #8, reached #3, ended up 11-2 #7

2006 - Played 1 top 10 team (#10 Clemson, lost) - Preseason #17, reached #11, ended up 10-3 #18

2007 - Played 3 top 10 teams (#2 LSU, lost. #2 BC, lost. #8 Kansas, lost) - Preseason #9, reached #3, ended up 11-3 #9

2008 - Played 0 top 10 teams - Preseason #15, reached #15, ended up 10-4 #15

2009 - Played 2 top 10 teams (#5 Alabama, lost. #9 Miami, won) - Preseason #7, reached #4, ended up 10-3 #10

2010 - Played 2 top 10 teams (#3 BSU, lost. #5 Stanford, lost) - Preseason #10, reached nothing higher, ended up 11-3 #16

2011 - Played 1 top 10 team (#2 FCS App St, won) - Preseason #13, reached #5, ended up 11-3 #21

2012 - Played 1 top 10 team (#8 FSU, lost) - Preseason #15, reached no higher ranking, ended up 7-6 unranked

2013 - Currently plays 1 top 10 team (#1 Alabama, lost) - Preseason unranked, have zero top 25 teams left on the 2013 schedule.

Not to toot my own horn, but if you compare preseason conference predictions with conference results over the last 10 years, you get this chart:

South Florida -164 296 45 61

First column after the name is a measure of how overrated a team is. More negative means more consistently overrated. It's also only conference results, so ND isn't on here and voters don't matter.

From this, VT and UGA aren't noticeably overrated on average, while FSU is.

So basically, South Florida is the most over rated, while NW is the most under rated? I'll agree with NW being consistently under rated, but you don't hear much about USF...

Possibly the most ironic post on this board ever. Nobody does less with more than Texas.

I would say USC and Texas are at least neck and neck in that race but my judgement would still be in favor of USC. Texas is a strong second place though in that regard.

I didn't expect USF either, but they had some really unexpectedly bad seasons lately. In both of the last two years, they've been picked to be about 2nd or 3rd and finished in last place. 2012 USF has the dubious distinction of being the third most overrated BCS team in the last decade (behind only 2007 Kansas and 2010 Texas).
