Question on ticket sales
Just curious if there has been an issue with ticket sales or something, as I've seen a lot of different promotions for the opener: 30 for 30 that sold them for $3, $2, and $1; bookstore having a promotion that anyone who buys $50 in apparel gets 2 free tix; and now the JMU gameplan email today about a cornhole tournament where every participant gets a free ticket and the winner gets to participate in the coin toss.
I believe I read somewhere that we got a lot of the CCSU tickets but this seems like a lot of promotions for just that allotment. Anyone have any visibility into this?

Question on ticket sales
If you look at the single game ticket sales site, you can actually view how many seats are available in each section. Sorry I'm on my phone so no link.
To answer your question, yes it looks like sales for the first three games are lagging behind pretty badly. However, Albany will sell out, ur and nova look like likely sellouts, and SB is still too far too tell but selling better than the first three.

Home opener will not sellout....not a shock really.

RE: Question on ticket sales
Not a huge surprise with 7 home games on the schedule this year. I would expect a good amount of day-of walk-up sales with the forecasted good weather.

RE: Question on ticket sales
The Student Duke Club posted something on facebook yesterday about student tickets still being available. That was disappointing to see. Most of our students don't know the difference between a bad CCSU team and a good North Dakota State team so the opponent is no excuse. Since this is the first game of the year, being burned out or disappointed in the football team isnt an excuse. So whats the deal!?!?!
Get your act together JMU students!!! Get to the game!!!

RE: Question on ticket sales
Dolley, I agree with you, and I know your "Get your act together jmu students" comment wasn't 100% serious (because you and I both know that anyone who is reading these boards will be at the game), but the real problem here is apathy. We are the weird ones who have a passion for an athletic program that the overwhelming majority of alumni and students don't have passion for. After reading this thread, I got to thinking: JMU has done an amazing job trying to sell the rest of these tickets. They didn't wait until the week before and then suddenly say "Oh no! We have a million tickets left over!" They have actively been trying to get butts in the seats for several weeks now, and I applaud them. I don't have an answer to the problem, but the problem is apathy. I just asked my buddy who played Club Baseball at JMU (and who has a very good job, no wife, no gf, no obligations, no where to be on Saturday) if he wanted to come to the game with me and my gf this Saturday. He asked who we were playing, and when I told him, he wrote "LOLOLOL Thanks but I think I'm watching paint dry that day at Benjamin Moore." That is the average JMU grads outlook on our athletic program. Not our outlook. Like I said, we are the weird ones. Again, I don't have the solution, but that is the problem.

Like it or hate it, it is a problem of perception. You can't draw the average fan to see CCSU and SFU. I fight it constantly with my JMU friends too....it's hard enough to get them to Homecoming.
But when we play an FBS opponent, or an App St (like in 2008) they come running.
We can debate this all day.....but I still believe that JMU will continue to decline in attendance while we are FCS.

that sounds very similar to the conversations i have with my buddies who graduated from jmu with me. "We're playing St. Francis? Are they division III?" or "Did we win the championship a few more times since 2004?" or "Are we still in the Colonial? I think I saw in the Washington Post that all the good teams left"
sigh - please get us the hell out of CAA!

Well, to be honest, I would expect all of those games to have higher attendance than SFU/CCSU, and not by a little bit either. Also, I doubt we would play UNT most years.

I think most people see the athletic department as small time. Most people who went to JMU probably could've also gone to schools like UVA, VT, Penn State, UMD, Rutgers etc. etc...all schools that are reguarly shown on ESPN and national broadcasts. Then there is JMU who opens the season against CCSU in football and only has 10 home basketball games this season (none of any note).
I root hard for the Dukes for sure, but I can see why some people would scoff at the athletic department.

Are you really arguing that CCSU/SFU carry the same weight with the average fan as FAU/FIU/UNT? Those 3 aren't exactly well known, but they get a whole lot more exposure than NEC teams.

RE: Question on ticket sales
It is ok to open up against easier opponents but they need to be someone that folks in the mid-atlantic has acutally heard of before - some good examples are:
- VMI
- Hampton
- Norfolk St
- Deleware St
- Coastal Carolina
- Liberty
And these are real quick just off the top of my head.
Scoff as you will but I agree the attendance would be much better in Conf-USA - It takes time to build name recognition but playing D1-A no matter the conference is a BIG sign that JMU takes football seriously.
Not sure what the deal is with Student attendance but it has been awful for years, even against good, CAA opponents when the football team is playing well.

I'm just discussing the reality of the current situation. Like I said, I don't know the solution, I'm just presenting the problem. That's the beauty of being on a message board...people who get paid a lot of money are forced to make those decisions. You and me are weird. Your friends are weird. They go to every JMU football game, regardless of who we are playing. I know we talked about this in private, but even I have a hard time getting myself to go see us play CCSU, and I love James Madison University.
Most people are not like us. They don't understand us. So, how do we get the 90% of Alumni who don't care about JMU sports to start caring?

I guarantee you that no one knows who any of those teams are.
My point is our problem is apathy towards our team itself, not our opponents. I keep hearing people saying they won't make it to home games because we're playing some joker. Well, ****, I could care less. It's still a Saturday in the fall and I'm in Harrisonburg in pLot with beautiful coeds and all my best friends and I'm in the center of the universe. Sure, you get excited for better opponents, but we're not going to be playing "name brand" teams anytime soon. Who outside of ECU, Marshall, and ODU would a random student know from CUSA? UTEP, maybe? Tulane?

Just a quick, not super accurate count leaves us w/ around 1500 unsold paying customer seats available. Who knows how many of the students will show. Do we still allocate around 8000 for the students?

Dirty, pretty sure most people in VA root for Skins (one of their biggest faults). Alfred Morris, one of the best young backs in the league just graduated from FAU. Pretty sure people know who they are.
