Virginia Tech & Penn State agree to football series
About time. Jim Weaver has tried to get this series done for years:

Now if he could just get a home/home with Tennessee, every Hokie fan would forget his prior transgressions and he could retire a saint.

Should be a great series, VT is always solid under Beamer and by the time this series is under way, Bud Foster may be leading them.

Yes, with JoePa's passing all sorts of new things will be on the horizon. Being more visible in VA makes lots of sense. Playing 1 of VaTech or UVA every year/2 yrs/3yrs makes sense.

Now the PSU has Eastern B1G playmates in Rutgers (NJ) and Maryland (DC/MD), need to keep/re-build PSU "presence" in NE/Mid-Atlantic. B1G membership already means hitting the Midwest every year, but need to use OOC for greater exposure in other areas (e.g. OOC game 2015 at home v SDSU - West Coast TV exposure). Due to sanctions, the next few years are as much about marketing/polishing tarnished image/maintaining idea of PSU as "crown jewel" CFB program (although on the field that likely will not be the case) as they are about competing on the field.

FIGHT ON STATE!

I've heard rumors a lot of these games will never even be played. They are just PR moves by ADs. At least thats what I heard about the WVU/VT series from someone fairly reliable

An Eastern Conference would have shared the same fate as the Big East. I fail to see how PSU would have been the glue to hold all these disparate universities together. There was always some other conference the football playing schools aspired (both athletically and academically) to be in.

Good series, long time coming (I've desired this home-and-home from the PSU POV for eons). But we STILL have to wait 9 years, ugh!

Ideally, Virginia's the type of state PSU should play in once every 5 years.

That sounds too good to be true.

Weaver doesn't sign contracts to back out on them. Though we have had a ton of BCS schools back out on us. Weaver and Beamer will be gone in a few years too so who knows.

While it is a way into the future, it should be a good 2 game series.

Penn State is a big time brand with a big time following. The BE basketball and football schools would have had to break. Penn State, Pitt, Rutgers, Cuse BC, VA Tech eventually UConn. That's a solid group. VA Tech would have gone to the ACC, but BC and Miami may not have.

There is an Eastern Conference. The B1G just got jealous of it and took Maryland. If PSU wanted to be in an EC they could have just joined the ACC.

Penn State has the largest alumni association in the country and before the Sandusky scandal hit in 2011, they were the third most profitable football program in the country.

Exactly, it would have likely suffered the exact same fate.

And PSU would have held an eastern conference together the same way Texas has held the Big 12 together, or in other words, it likely also would have driven schools from it.

No one in the business trusted or really even liked Paterno. The conditions that he tried to build into his conference were imbalanced to PSU's favor and no one trusted him after the way he had PSU exit the Eastern Eight. The acrimony and lack of trust is why it never happened. And if it had happened, it likely would have been a disaster the way it was to be construed. Imagine the original Big East football conference but swapping PSU for Miami, building in unequal revenue sharing that favors one or two schools, and not having any of the Big East basketball hype. That's a recipe for disaster.

I'm not disputing PSU credentials as a school, or that it isn'y capable of doing so like Texas. I just don't think that when better options came to fruition that PSU would desire to anchor a major conference.

For fun lets say JoePa creates the Eastern Conference back in the '80's. 10 years later, after the SEC goes to 12, do you think PSU and some other EC school would have turned down an invite to the B10?

Even if JoePa was against it, the School President would have accepted the invite w/o his knowledge. And if not the B10, the option of the ACC expanding with FSU, PSU and some other EC program would have certainly been just as enticing.
