Normally I would take this opportunity slam Panama, slam GaState, and slam that monocled limey guy too.

Buuuut, when new coaches seem to catch lightning in a bottle, it's always in YEAR TWO of their tenures. It could happen.

There is a chance this year for us to go 6-6 and next year win either 7 or 8 games depending on the schedule. 2015 I think is the year we really start to make some noise with possible 10+ wins and SBC championship aspirations.

conference 2014
bowl 2015

just kiddin'

Honestly the expectations of GSU fans are that we win sooner than later. The coach will have about 4-5 years to win something. If not the fanbase will turn into an angry mob. 03-hissyfit

I think GSU will go to a bowl game in 3-4 years. So 2016

Hopefully we go to E vs W divisions soon. If that happens in 2015 then I think GSU has a shot at the division title and then who knows what happens in the championship game.

The hope here is to be competitive from day one. The reality is that there will be some growing pains but with the Apps having a very young team currently, they should have a shot at competing for a SB title/bowl bid by 2015 or 2016.

I read Athlon's FBS preview while on vacation. Of the 32 new coaching hires for FBS team for this year, Miles was ranked 6. It could be an interesting East when we get to 12.

Cajuns who are 8-4 in their last 12 FCS games and only one of those teams made the playoffs and that one team was destroyed in the first round. He keeps talking the no FBS wins, but we have performed better against FCS teams than the Cajuns. Not to mention they have never beaten the FBS teams we have played.

Now let's get this thread back on topic.

Miles biggest challenge will be getting people in the stands. It is going to hurt recruiting if there are 5,000 people in the stands. He seems to be a good coach so I can see the Panthers making a lot of progress by 2014.

The real challenge moving up to FBS for anyone is maintaining attendance while winning 4 or 5 games a for a couple of years. You have to manage fan expectations. If your fan base is expecting 9 wins your first year when realistically 5 is a success then people will start staying home to watch Georgia and Bama.

I said this before and I will stick to it. I expect TXST to compete for the Sun Belt title win in possibly 2014 and even 2015.

How can you say that with such uncertainty at QB? That alone makes me wonder, not even counting our current woes on the defensive line.

I think our RB, LB, & WR corps for sure are able to compete in the Sun Belt. I believe our secondary has the ability to compete, but not locks. I think our O-line needs another year of seasoning (read: need to see them perform better this year) to be ready for prime time.

But our D-Line and QB are so uncertain, it's tough to say we'll be competing.

In an ideal situation, we get a JUCO transfer DT or two this offseason, our DE's step up, and either Moore or Jones grabs the QB spot by the horns and shuts up the competition. Then I'd agree with you. Until that happens though... I'm concerned. (and those are big deals to accomplish to happen).

Strengths:

LB: I'd say we have this year one of the top 3 LB corps in the Sun Belt. Next year, could be the best (all our LB's will be returning for next season).

WR: Good group. Easily top half of the Sun Belt next year.

RB: This group has the potential to be special, and lots of younger guys so we'll be returning almost everyone.

DB: Solid group, great corner that'll be around at least another year, and some young studs who could pan out to make it a tough secondary next year.

O-Line: Young and full of talent. If they can gel together, they could be a top half of the Sun Belt unit next season, maybe even top 3.

QB: On paper? We got a stud waiting to destroy everything in his path. Very hopeful for future years (keep in mind, I said some key words in there like "on paper" and "hopeful").

DL: We have a couple of DE's that can be really really good. DT is still a huge gaping hole for us next year. Yendrey is a senior and we just dropped a DT who everyone was excited about (I believe he was an ESPN 4 star kid).

Sounds like you do have a lot of the pieces of the puzzle in place but, yeah QB ? and D line could require a lot of Nexium.

RE: What's your window to compete for a title or bowl bid?
We have Will Trevellion waiting in the DT wings. Kid was the NUC combine MVP and combine "king". He's a true freshman this year so redshirt and give him time in the weight room and practicing with the team.

Also have McClarty (RS-Fr), Nikocevic will have another year and Gonzales (soph TR) may turn into a player; we just don't know yet. We also have commit Rios.

They may have to recruit another DT or two but I think we'll be ok after Yendrey, McColloch and Taulelei leave.

QB will only be a question this year. In 2014 I think it will be settled. Unless Moore really gets it I think Jones will take over with Moore backing him. 2013 is an issue until the season starts but I feel the QB situation will be less muddled for 2014. (at least I hope so)
