UTSA @ Rice last year was the largest crowd of the season at Rice stadium with 28K. The next closest was the first game of the season vs UCLA which fielded 23K. Since UTSA now has has a student body that is 50% from Harris county, Rice fans will always be able to count on higher attendance when playing UTSA. Good news going forward in this young rivalry

RE: Its too bad Rice doesnt have a good following
I had the privilege of visiting Rice stadium last year.

I will admit....was shocked at being able to park 20 yds from the gate.

It really is a cool venue. The campus and surrounding area are also spectacular. It's an nice escape from the concrete hell known as Houston.

I still amazes me that Rice was tuition free until, what....1965?

I am of the opinion that Rice is much larger than attendance numbers.

Sometimes, that matters more.

Tulsa....don't be shocked this year if they take west crown.....

Good point. Fans of UTSA, North Texas, Rice and Louisiana Tech should have no problem traveling to road games against one another. We were really pleased to see so many UTSA fans at last year's game at Rice Stadium. I wish it weren't true, but Rice fans travel terribly. We just don't have the numbers. If 600 of us make it to San Antonio this year, it will be quite an accomplishment.

You want to see a large stadium with nobody in it, there is a far better example than Rice.....

It starts with more winning, but we can get back to those numbers.

Agree 100%.

Way I heard it, all the alumni living and dead would not fill up one end zone.

Wikipedia says we had 51,961 living alumni in 2011, and 6,082 students (including post-graduate).

This whole thread gripes me a bit, because I don't think our football attendance is significantly different from Tulsa, Tulane, or SMU.

I've seen Tulane games. I think we out-draw them at least 5-1.

Your baseball team out draws tulane football fans 5-1.

My Greater Houston Area HS football team my sophomore year was playing a rare Saturday game and were en route to Schulenberg, Texas, to play Sacred Heart High School. Yep, we're just a bunch of a-holes for letting you guys use our stadium even after you jumped conferences on us and by some accounts made it clear you would block our entry into the AAC.

Rice only drew 23k playing UCLA in Houston. UH sold the game out when the came to The Rob.

Rice only drew 28k when paying UTSA, UH will draw 42-43k next year, selling that game out. UH will draw 45-55k in San Antonio this year.

UH played TCU in Reliant a few years ago and drew 65k.

Rice played Baylor and only drew 23k

UH plays Baylor and 45-50k would show up in Reliant. (Though they keep dodging us in fear of losing)

Rice plays Purdue and only drew 25k

UH plays Purdue, attendance would be no lower than 42k.

Rice will not break 30k unless playing UH/UT/A&M. You don't even break 30k when playing Big 10 or Pac 12 teams. There is nobody on your home schedule that will break 30k. If UH is ranked, undefeated or simply decent and if Cincy is ranked, undefeated or simply decent, HRS will be sold out (the 47k capacity not the 70k obviously) or at the very least, over 40k.

So its not an absurdity at all, UH is simply a much better draw than Rice is. Especially with local Houstonians.

Because it turned into a rip on Rice. We averaged 20,325 last year, better than Tulane (18,085), and not much different than Tulsa (20,418) and SMU (21,292).

Cougar Hippy is also making some exaggerated claims for a Houston team that averaged 27,247 last year.

don't care about yoohoo-chinchy. we'll see if anybody else does.

but if Rice wims as often as I think they will, by the end of the season a lot of fans will be at HRS to see Rice, not their opponent.

You're actually bragging about Houston being a better draw than Rice? The alumni and student enrollment discrepancy between the two universities alone is far more than enough to account for the differences in attendance. You guys have an enrollment of 40K and they have 6K for crying out loud!

Your average home attendance last year at Robertson Stadium was 27.5K while Rice's average home attendance was 20.3K, but your enrollment is nearly 7 times the size of Rice! So what is there to brag about? LMAO! In fact, you should be flat-out embarrassed by UH's attendance figures. Heck, even UTSA outdraws you! Houston has 10,000 more students than UTSA, and has had football for 66 years. And yet UTSA, which has only had a football program 2 years, has already outdrawn UH in EACH of our first two seasons. Rather than brag about attendance, you should run with those numbers of yours and hide in a corner.

You have NOTHING to talk about when it comes to attendance, and proportionally speaking, Rice actually outdraws us both.

Btw, UH will not draw 45-55K in San Antonio. UTSA averages over 30K in attendance in its first two seasons, which is more than what you guys average, so UTSA (not Houston) will draw the majority of those fans. Please know what you're talking about before posting so that we're not subjected to a bunch of rubbish.
