RE: Legends Bowl - MAC vs Sun Belt - Charleston, South Carolina
After reading the article it is pretty clear that the bowl game has been taken hostage by political issues. IMO the NCAA should not be deciding these things that are in fact not part of their mandate. The people of the USA can decide to boycott SC or not, players vote on accepting bowl invitations.
No doubt the confederate flag has different meanings to different citizens. It is pretty clear to most in the USA the flag is about an illegal rebellion, to others it is about states rights, and to many it is about a states right to allow slavery. These are all non reconcilable political issues and the NCAA should not be a party to those political issues.
We need one in Little Rock, and South Carolina as well, a bowl that is.

The NCAA has given Wofford home playoff games for the last few years. Considering a bowl game isn't even an NCAA event, I'm pretty sure the bowl group can tell these different groups to screw off.

All the new bowl games are just proposals at this point. Won't know for a few more months which ones will actually become reality.

Montgomery must be out as a bowl site. The Legends Bowl website listed Montgomery, AL just a few weeks ago.
"The Legends Bowl, LLC. is a 501© (3) tax-exempt organization. Our mission is to provide the City of Charleston and the State of South Carolina with the most innovative of all college football bowl games"

No disrespect to the MAC, I like our bowl tie ins that we have, but would like to see some bowl ties with other conferences as well. The AAC would be nice and at least one with a BCS conference, even if it is our #2 team v their #10 team.

Rumor is that no P5 conference will play a bowl game against a G5 conference.

That could be a rather significant red flag in regards to the stability of the group trying to create a bowl

The AAC has 2 lined up so far. CUSA has one so far with the potential for another. So there will be some bowl interaction between the P5 & G5. Now the SBC will likely not have a P5 bowl match-up.

Bowl proposals mean very little. Ask the Cure Bowl and the LA Christmas Bowl.
Not saying none of these get approved, just don't start counting chickens...

Sounds like they are shopping it to different cities trying to see if they can get a city or a sponsor to step up and pay for it.

Charleston could be a great selection for a bowl game. It is a destination city with millions of visitors and offers whatever a family would want in a bowl game trip with great food, early American history, SC's low country and of course the war period. Weather is generally mild in late December and could give Charleston that national sporting event that it doesn't have at the moment. And trust me, their is no boycott in Charleston or South Carolina.

""In the movie 'Field of Dreams,' it was if you build it [a field] they will come. This is if you come, we will build it," he said.
William Jenkinson, chairman of The Citadel's Board of Visitors, said the college doesn't have a dog in the fight over the Palmetto Bowl. It just needs a new stadium. It can play in a planned upgraded facility (22,000 seats) or a bowl-game-sized facility (35,000 seats).
"The Citadel wants a football field and we're going to build one - - one way or another," he said.
A bowl game in the Charleston area would allow The Citadel, plus other schools and groups, to have access to a larger stadium. "

A MODERN FACILITY
The Legends Bowl has targeted venues that have less than 40,000 seats, rather than much larger NFL and major college stadiums, in order to create a scarcity effect for tickets. Full stadiums also enhance the appeal of the game on television.
http://legendsbowl.com/the-venue.html
So the stadium would be completely expanded and newly renovated.

The winners write the history books and do so to reflect their view of the conflict. That flag was not a divisive issue to most of America until radical white supremacist groups hijacked it to use as a symbol of their hatred and vitriol. It is sad a banner so rooted in history and theology has been smeared by so much misunderstanding and misplaced anger. It is worthy of note that not a single slave came to these shores under that flag, but millions were under the Stars & Stripes.
Charleston is one of my favorites cities in the country. It is the one thing I will miss about the SoCon. Charleston civic leaders have been talking about hosting a bowl game for at least 20 years. It would be a great place for folks to visit, but as far hosting a bowl game goes the stadium does need some work and more seating. The press box side and fieldhouse are first rate, not so much the opposite side.

I haven't heard the flag mentioned in a very long time (maybe years) until this thread. It is not flown on the capital but is on the grounds, it is a non issue.

I've been arguing for bowl games in Charleston, SC and Norfolk, Va about as long as I've arguing for App to the FBS (the two were related in my mind). With two new FBS programs each in NC and GA, and one in VA (with the likelihood of at least one, maybe two, more in VA plus possibly Delaware), there is a market for another east coast bowl - in someplace other than Atlanta, Charlotte, or DC. There just needs to be a big enough stadium. ODU will likely expand anyway and it wouldn't take much to get Charleston up a bit. I say SBC v MAC in one and SBC v CUSA in the other.

I'm biased but Charleston would be a perfect host city. Citadel's stadium had a recent upgrade to the home side. If they plan to expand and upgrade the visitors side then they could easily reach 30k+ seats. That is a perfect size for a 3rd or 4th place Mac vs SBC game. The city has been rated #1 for best tourist city and friendliness.
I could see it happening, but only if they start construction tomorrow. Maybe a 2015 start date is more realistic, that visitors side is horrible.
