New Revamped Astrodome?
Would you be ok with tearing down the (old)Football Stadium and not rebuilding a new facility at current location if, the New Dome could meet your football needs?

Umm. Why not? If we tear down HRS, why wouldn't we consider playing a game or two at a revamped Astrodome? Are we responding this way just 'cause it is Burpelson or is the idea that abhorrent?

I cannot see any way that the astrodome would meet any of Rice's needs.

1. It isn't on campus, which is something that many here feel strongly about
2. Operational expenses would be astronomical
3. We already have a large stadium that is rarely over half full

How could a stadium at Kirby and 610, whether revamped or not, meet the need for a football stadium at Rice?

Crap, reading comprehension fail! I assumed Burpelson meant playing at the dome until the new on campus stadium was complete. In that case, no, no, and no.

It ultimately was not determined to be acceptable to a certain academic cornerstone with a football team that wears Red jerseys some of the time. Why would it be acceptable for the school with the higher academic standards whose team wears blue and grey? Sometimes unconventional wisdom reflects learning from the mistakes of others...

Ive said this before - my ideal situation would have been a joint UH/Rice stadium similar to the new meadowlands. Saves on $$ and both schools could make a much nicer deal out of it.

Ill be honest, what they are proposing is incredibly nice, but I am with you on the controlling aspect of revenue, but if the County were to work with you on that part, you would have a world class indoor facility with no H-Town heat to contend with.

Totally for it assuming

a) it has a retractable roof
b) they move it to the Rice campus

RE: New Revamped Astrodome?
Part of the charm of playing at Rice is if folks take a chance to go through the campus. Now if they want to go past multiple Tilman restaurants, car dealerships, smoke shops, tattoo parlors then the Dome would do. I won't even go to the next situation.

But seriously, if we could ever get our act together on the field and in the athletic department the idea of folks coming to games at HRS and then to the restaurants and bars in the village like they do at other campus stadiums it would be huge.

I agree a walk through the campus is a major, but if at the it end, it ends with a crap experience, then one must make a change for the sake of the team. UH wrestled with this, and it took someone to say, we must tear it all down and start fresh.

Is what they're proposing for the Dome even that exciting? I thought they're turning it into convention space that perhaps will be fully utilized 3-4 times a year (Rodeo, OTC, and 1 or 2 other big conventions?).

Would UH consider stopping their construction and moving into the upgraded Astrodome?

This, plus Rice is consistently voted one of the prettiest campuses in the country. Why would we give that up?

Why didn't UH do it, plus as I understand they're not doing a stadium... though I could be wrong... not really keeping up with it

We had that, Rice Stadium and it still exist at 6100 Main Street. UH and the Oilers bailed on our stadium for the dome.

RE: New Revamped Astrodome?
yeah, Robertson has been torn down, and a new one is being built as we speak, but there were some before Dr Khator, that wanted to play at Reliant, but Dr Khator really showed leadership when she steeped in and said no, its a must to have a stadium on campus! Im just asking that if Faculty and Staff at Rice do not want football on the campus, and they have the push to end football, would people be open to moving football to the Dome in order to save the program?
