Who Is or Was the Meanest College Football Coach?
Who is or was the meanest college football coach?

Mean doesn't mean that they are or were a bad coach. Some of the best coaches have or have had their mean streaks.

Some would turn their eyes toward a certain Ohio State coach that got fired after a bowl game push against a player from Clemson.

How about the coach that had a player that couldn't practice locked into a storage room during practice.

Some might look toward a great coach that ended his career at a certain Alabama school, but had legendary camps back in Texas that sounded like Navy Seal advanced training survival schools.

Would have to give my vote for Nick Saban. Yep, that one, from the Crimson Tide of Alabama. Cannot doubt that he will go down as probably one of the greatest coaches of all time. However, "In 2011 it was reported that after a long practice in 2005, a player collapsed into convulsions in the locker room and Saban simply stepped over his body, heading upstairs to his office without saying a word."
The man has a lot of determination to win, yet texted his Dolphin players saying he was leaving , and took the Alabama job, after denying it for weeks. Surprised he even texted them.
Left LSU after winning a National Championship, then took the Dolphins job. Always hard to know what Saban is going to do.
Saban has his own style. Gotta love some things he does or says:

I actually think it was an app state grad... Paul Johnson. And I love the guy.

Understand that Paul still has a mountain house near Boone, he was born and raised there, or at another house nearby.
Guess he will be under a lot of pressure this year at Georgia Tech.

Okay I was shocked to see he went to app so I wiki'ed him. WOW ... he never played college ball (some of the best coaches never played). Avery county ... 20 minutes from where I grew up. I did not know that much about him other than what he did at GaSo. Cool stuff.

I think Will Muschamp will make this list one day. The way he stared his player down before he started yelling at him during the Ga-Fla game last year showed he's got some potential to be the meanest....

It is hard to believe that you never knew that. Of course, not too many App State celebrations for Paul Johnson since he used to be the head coach of Georgia Southern, then Navy, and now GaTech.

Some of the best coaches have never played football themselves. Would think it would make it a lot harder for them, but there are some really notable ones that took up coaching without playing a down.

Thought it was Valdosta State, but was Mumme a strict disciplinarian also?

He also got his undergrad from Western ... so no we won't be celebrating him! :)

I am with you, must have received a scholarship to WCU, they probably needed some smart people to come there. At least he got his Masters
from App State.

Surprised no one has talked about Woody Hayes of Ohio State. He seemed like Hell on Wheels for a football coach. Reminded me of Bob Knight on steroids.

LOL. Anyone meaner than Lombardi? Papa Bear Halas? Don Shula? The 1972 Dolphins had 4 a days in training camp...in South Florida. Meaner than Chuck Knoll? I think we are just in a woosie generation. I mean Woody Hayes? Bear Bryant? Booby Dodd? These were not nice warm and fuzzy guys.

I couldn't handle four a days in South Florida at that time of year, used to live there.
We were discussing college coaches, but those are some really nasty mean coaches.
Always thought Notre Dame's Knute Rockne might have been a really mean & demanding coach if he hadn't coached at Notre Dame. Heard a few times his speech, wasn't accurate: Some time, Rock, when the team is up against it, when things are going wrong and the breaks are beating the boys, tell them to go in there with all they've got and win just one for the Gipper.

Well the last three are college coaches. But point is football was just tougher back then. There was just more expected.

I used to think it was tougher, but believe it was just mainly much more cruel than tough because the biggest thing coaches thought about was pushing football players to and or past their limits to see who might quit on them. They had very few restrictions, and if someone died, well it just happens.
Today there are a lot more restrictions, but players work on what they need to a lot more. Doesn't mean that it's not plenty tough.

Plenty tough doesnt mean its as tough. Steven Jackson even mentioned that to explain his age and number of career attempts in the NFL. Basically said that being 30 isnt a big deal because its not the kind of league it was in the 60's, 70's and 80's...

I will nominate our former USL Coach Russ Faulkinberry---Our center needed to take a leak and he was told to pee in his pants which he did--and yes the QB and other ball carriers had to finish practice this way---after hitting a player and cutting his hand he had his hand resting on my shoulder with the blood coming down my back---Yes we won --even beat the Duck Dude and Bradshaw!!

He had a coach in 2003, Manny Matsakis, who had players walk on hot coals and other weird things. No surprise he only lasted one season.
