RE: New Falcons/ GSU stadium
They wouldn't get it as they've hosted too recently, and the relationship between the USOC and the IOC isn't the greatest in the world.

We haven't hosted since then and don't have any American games scheduled in the future. I'd say the relationship is quite chilly.

My apologies. I was only referring to the Summer Games.

Hosting the Olympics isn't like hosting the Super Bowl, I doubt any of us ever see Atlanta host again. Paris has hosted twice, Athens has hosted twice, Los Angeles has hosted twice, London has hosted three times(Tokyo has a bid in to host for the second time in 2020) I love Atlanta, but I don't see us joining that group.

I'm betting Chicago will be the next American city to host. Atlanta is set up nicely for the Olympics, but I just don't see us hosting again.

Chicago has bid 3 times and lost all of them; most recently for 2016. I think Dallas/Ft. Worth would be a good candidate.

NYC bid in 2012, Chicago bid in 2016. We didn't bid for 2020, but will apparently be putting together a bid for 2024.

From wiki:

"...the cities listed below that are actively exploring a potential bid, Boston,[35]Chicago,[36][37][38]New York City,[36][39]San Diego, Minneapolis–Saint Paul,[40] and Philadelphia[41] have been mentioned as potentially being interested in bidding, but have not yet formally announced their intentions to explore potential bids..."

"On February 19, 2013, the USOC sent out letters to the mayors of 35 cities to gauge their interest in hosting the 2024 Olympics. Some of the cities included were Atlanta, Boston, New York City, Chicago, Philadelphia, Austin, San Antonio, Houston, Memphis, Pittsburgh, Jacksonville, Miami, St. Louis, Sacramento, Seattle, Charlotte, Portland, Phoenix, Columbus, Orlando, Nashville, Rochester and Indianapolis.[42]"

"
Dallas

On August 14, 2012, WFAA in Dallas reported that the Dallas 2024 committee is firming up plans for a Dallas 2024 Olympic bid. Matt Wood, involved in the successful Sydney 2000 Olympic bid for the 2000 Summer Olympics, is leading the effort for Dallas 2024. The current plan calls for Fair Park to be transformed into an Olympic Village with housing for 20,000 people and which would later be converted to apartments. The existing Cotton Bowl would be heavily renovated for track and field events in order to serve as an Olympic Stadium. American Airlines Center, Cowboys Stadium, and FC Dallas Stadium have also been mentioned as potential venues for other events.[43]
Los Angeles
Los Angeles hosted the 1932 and 1984 Summer Olympics. Los Angeles bid to become the US applicant city for the 2016 Summer Olympics, however the USOC selected Chicago instead. In September 2011, Los Angeles was awarded the 2015 Special Olympics World Summer Games.[44] In November 2011, a delegation from Los Angeles attended a seminar at the IOC headquarters in Lausanne for cities interested in bidding on future Olympic Games.[45] In February 2012, Los Angeles hosted the 5th IOC World Conference on Women and Sport. At the conference, Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa and IOC Member Anita DeFrantz stated that that the city would be interested in hosting for a third time.[46] On August 17, 2012, Councilman Tom LaBonge announced that he would introduce a motion that would get the ball rolling on a bid to host the Summer Olympics in Los Angeles. The motion would call on the Southern California Committee for the Olympic Games to gather and explore a future bid, potentially in 2024.[47][48] On March of 2013, Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa has officially sent a letter to the USOC stating that the city is interested in bidding to host the 2024 Olympic Games.[49]
Baltimore-Washington
On August 5, 2012, it was reported that Dan Knise, President and CEO of the Washington-Baltimore 2012 Regional Coalition, which bid unsuccessfully for the 2012 Summer Games that were won by London, was scoping the level of interest for a joint DC-Baltimore bid for the 2024 Summer Games. According to the Baltimore Sun, Knise believes that "there's a little bit of a spark" for another attempt at securing the bid.[50] The Sun also quoted John Moag Jr., a previous chairman of the Maryland Stadium Authority, in stating that the Baltimore-Washington area has "the largest sports infrastructure in a 40-mile radius."[51][52]
Tulsa
The Tulsa Olympics Exploratory Committee is currently exploring a bid for the 2024 Summer Olympics and is expected to place an official bid in 2015 with USOC consent. The Tulsa Olympics Exploratory Committee is currently suggesting an American Indian theme for 2024.[53][54]
Philadelphia
On 22 April 2013, Mayor Nutter's office declared Philadelphia's interest in bidding for the 2024 Games. The city had previously expressed interest in hosting the 2016 Games, but lost out to Chicago as the USOC's bid city. [55]
San Diego-Tijuana
A joint bid between San Diego, CA and Tijuana, Mexico is being explored. On May 8, 2013, San Diego Mayor Bob Filner met with Mitt Romney, who oversaw the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City. Mayor Filner said Romney will act as an advisor for the bidding process.[56]
Boston
Boston could use the metro area to host some of the events. Boston could use TD Garden, Harvard Stadium and Gillette Stadium to host a couple events. Boston would need to build an Olympic Stadium. On 7 May 2013, the local joint committee on Tourism, Arts and Cultural talked about the Boston 2024 bid.[57][58]

Toronto could also be favorite in 2024 and a competitor to a US bid. Canada hasn't hosted a Summer Olympics since 1976 but they did have the Vancouver Winter Games in 2010.

That is a HUGE target for the cityof Atlanta and a big reason for building a new dome.

Too spread out for the IOC's liking, especially with most facilities located way out in Arlington.

In addition to the lackluster relationship between the IOC & the USOC, this is another issue that will plague most american cities. The IOC wants as tight a footprint as possible which is something the autocentric, sprawling urban/suburban mess that is the typical american city, with sports facilities spread out along the periphery and away from the center city, cannot provide like the European and Asian cities. What exacerbates the problem is also the dearth of public transit options, which forces visiting spectators into a usually grossly inefficient bus system or renting a car and taking their chances in hectic traffic.

One other key issue holding back US bids is the current IOC mandate to take the games to places they haven't been before (south america, Africa, the middle east, south Asia, ect.) The US has hosted the most games of any nation.

RE: [split] New Atlanta stadium & The Olympics
Yes, we are spread out, but the main issue is the fractured regional issues.

Most facilities wouldn't be in Arlington. The only things out there are Rangers Ballpark, Cowboys Stadium and the facilities at UTA (of which only CPC really is Olympic worthy).

If the plans are to convert Fair Park and the Cotton Bowl, coupled with the AAC, most venues are within a few miles. Baseball would be an issue, with pro stadiums in Grand Prairie, Arlington, Fort Worth and Frisco. The water courses present a challenge too. The Trinity River has been targeted for recreational amenities, but it is all held up because they want to put a high-speed tollroad in the river floodway. A whitewater course was built and done so badly they had to close it because it was lethal to even experienced canoeists.

DART Rail connects the Dallas venues fairly well, though it doesn't go to the exurbs, particularly Arlington or Frisco, though commuter rail plans are in the works by the North Central Texas Council of Governments. The legislature has been uncooperative, so they have remained on the drawing board for almost a decade. I don't think commuter rail is adequate for what they want, and in the suburbs where there is light rail, it doesn't connect to much but park-and-ride lots. There will be a light rail connection to the airport from downtown Dallas next year, so when looking at the immediate Dallas area, transit works well if not perfect.

But really, the issue comes with regional cooperation. The Super Bowl was given as an example of DFW regional cooperation, but that was one event where the main events were in Dallas, a few in Fort Worth and the game in Arlington. Getting all the regional cities together, including suburbs who have worked to kill other cities for self-gain, is the big issue. Dallas, Fort Worth, Arlington, Frisco, Grand Prairie, Irving, Plano, etc. would all have to not just work together, but be a team. For example, as soon as Fort Worth feels they are getting the shaft in terms of events or exposure, they would pull their support because their attitude is F Dallas, even if they get some benefit. They just don't want Dallas to get more. it is a classic example of small wiener syndrome.

If DFW can present a unified front, they might have a chance. If not, which is the better bet, then I'd put my money elsewhere.

Didn't the IOC pulled the plug on olympic baseball and softball?

[split] New Atlanta stadium & The Olympics
According to the folks on the Gamesbids forums, a lot of people in the IOC were interested in San Francisco hosting, but the 49ers moving to Santa Clara effectively killed that.

Chicago's 2016 bid was done in largely by the lack of a post-Olympic use for an Olympic stadium-unless if the Bears or Cubs move (no chance whatsoever) an Olympic stadium would be a complete waste.

In 2024 Turner Field will be 27 years old-the more time passes, the more likely the same strategy employed for the 1996 Games becomes likely. 2032 would probably be more likely for Atlanta to get the maximum utility out of Turner Field before using a new stadium.

I personally don't think Atlanta would get it in 2024, but they probably will host again-the United States is by far the IOC's most valuable TV partner.

The cities that are in bold should NEVER be included. The cities that are underlined are the only realistic options listed. The rest are somewhere inbetween.
