God, Rally Club was awful.

Not always, by any means. In the mid-1980s, the Rice student section was embarrassing the university by shouting obscenities throughout the game. The VP for Student Affairs called the Rally officers into his office and asked the club to take the lead in changing that tone. The club proceeded to do just that -- energetically and successfully. There were many good moments for the club in those years -- it was the same period in which Rally Club built mock goal posts for the fans to tear down after a win, organized a bonfire for Homecoming, and taught itself and then other students the words to the Rice fight song -- but in many ways this was the accomplishment of which many Rally men were most proud. Later I realized that it was very astute leadership by the VP as well, and a few years ago I had an opportunity to tell him that in person.

I don't know why or how that ethos within Rally was lost, but it was, and disappointingly so. Once that ethos was gone, the club became useless.

Yup, and they became the worst offenders of what they were supposed to change.

You can rest assured that few people were more disappointed in the Rally members of the 2000s than were the Rally men of the 1980s and early 1990s. It is disheartening to watch a good thing turned bad, and then die.

It must have been "Frat Night" with cheap beer to boot. The chorus of "Fire crotch! Fire crotch!" was hilarious. Of course, we won the game. I also recall walking from the bullpen to the dugout before game #1 of the 2002 Super Regional against LSU to cheers of "Tiger bait! Tiger bait!" We won that one, too.

It sure beats playing in an echo chamber.

That said, neither of those incidents really crossed the line as PTH indicates was done at Oregon.

Steve:

Since you bring up 2002 Super Regionals against LSU...

Rice won both games of a double header shutting out LSU in both games. WELL DONE!

How many hits and walks did you give up?

How many hits and walks in the other game? Who pitched?

How do you compare that day to Jordan's gem Saturday?

When I think of great pitching performances by Rice, I have a short list...

Alan Ramirez against Texas, 1976, 16 Ks

Matt Williams against Texas in the SWC tournament.

2002 SuperRegional Sweep of LSU.

2003 Wade Townsend against Texas

I hate to burst your bubble, but that type of thing happens with Rice students ALL THE TIME in all sports, especially basketball and the hill in baseball.

How many times in the last eight years on this board have I ever complained about heckling, or anything of the sort? Heaven knows I've had some testy one-way conversations with a few umpires myself.

This went way beyond anything I've ever heard from the Rice student section. And that dates back to 1968. (Ed Erwin's 1970 Aggie Yellleaders schtick was borderline, but hilarious.) These guys were beyond ********, beyond morons. And they kept up a constant bellowing diatribe the entire game, egged on by their yuk-yukking Kmart-fan neighbors.

That fact that it was apparently thought by the bulk of Oregon fans (and media) to be clever and cute instead of idiotic and sophomoric was the most remarkable thing about the incident. And many of the comments (especially those directed to Leon Byrd) WERE beyond inappropriate.

I understand, you weren't there so could quite logically come back with the comeback you came back with. Usually makes sense. Not this time though. Not a single Rice fan in our section was anything but disgusted.

Reminds me of what Uncle Charlie told me in '73 when I was headed off to UT Law School (his being A&M '54 and UTLaw '59) "(Such behavior) just refines your hatred of the sonsabitches."

If it was really that bad, shouldn't it be brought to the attention of the Oregon AD and President? It sounds as if it was potentially racist as well, and an apology to Leon Byrd and Rice University along with appropriate disciplinary action for the students involved might be in order.

For that matter, you should bring it to the attention of Rick Greenspan. Maybe he'll want to leave and join the athletic department at Oregon.

One important consideration in heckling is avoiding saying anything you do not want youngsters to hear since they are always in the audience at bullgames-so no obscenities or racial slurs.

Obscenities are not appropriate, but I can look past those to some extent; same with jokes about regional stereotypes.

However, even vaguely racist and/or homophobic slurs are crossing the line in any case. But if this is what happened in Eugene, I am not surprised in the least. Oregon is the armpit of the West Coast and is the very epitome of slack-tivism and pseudo-diversity.

UO is also a terrible school, so I would expect no less from their "students."

Reviewing those box scores reminded me about Wally Pontiff, LSU's 3rd baseman who died unexpectedly from a heart issue. As of a couple of of years ago there were still a few po'boy shops and bars with his picture and number up around New Orleans.

I fail to see the significant difference between regional stereotypes and race stereotypes. As far as I'm aware those have a lot of common ground.

The 1981 Rice/A&M Football Game with a 8 foot long "Sparky the Hooter" waving in the second row of the Student Section was unforgettable.

You’ve made disparaging remarks about two academic institutions in as many days -- Wichita State and University of Oregon. Are such posts really necessary? In my opinion, I think they are better kept to yourself since they distract from other members’ thoughtful comments, keen observations and helpful information as they relate to collegiate athletics. And, these types of posts do not reflect well on Rice University and the entire alumni population, who, I would hope would (and for the most part do) refrain from such immature and ignorant behavior (ironically, the level of behavior for which you chastise Oregon students).

Just out of curiosity – which school(s) do you consider “good”?

Thank you.

I still think that the 2002 team was "better" than the 2003 National Champions. The losses to UT and ND were bitter.

That history made Townsend's victory over UT mid season followed by the two victories over UT at Omaha so sweet.

I still chuckle when I think about all the folks at Rosenblatt who asked why a good many in the Rice crowd were crying after Ruchti's hit.

There was a story in Sallyport about that 2002 season:
http://www.rice.edu/ricemagazine/Sallypo...Summer.pdf
(see pp 88-90 of the PDF).

One behind-the-scenes part of the super-regional story was the advance planning that Dave Welsh and the Rice ticket office did to make sure that LSU (who had clinched their s-r berth before we did) did not squeeze Rice fans out of their own park.

Blah, blah, etc. Thanks for following my posts, CrabCake! I know a doctor that can help you get that stick out of your ***.

There's a little bit of hypocrisy in all of us, even you, Mr./Ms. Pure-as-white-drifted-snow. You ain't got any edge, so spare me your admonitions.

For the sake of propriety, I will not make any further disparaging comments about other schools on here. But go do one, CrabCake.

And BTW CrabCake, I find it somewhat interesting that the second that UO is involved, you jump right into the fray. Steadfast defender of Kazemi, critic of me for slamming UO...

Wiessman,

Chill – you need not be so paranoid – just take a deep breath and relax. I didn’t mean to “ruffle your feathers.” I don’t have an agenda or an axe to grind – at least not at a level of the tone of your posts (such anger).

Wow, wish I had known that. My FB season tickets were right next to where he and his family used to sit. I would have given him major kudos in person, especially in front of my parents-LSU grads (who also happen to be strong Rice supporters now).

Kudos Dave, wherever you may be...
