RE: Cullen Finnerty former GVSU QB found dead
It is a very sad story. Sounds like he has been dealing with mental/emotional issues for some time. Family is concerned it may be the result of concussions he suffered playing football.

Tragic end for a great young man. Hope the authorities are able to figure out what transpired.

How does anyone even know that at this point? All we know is: He went fishing by himself, people lost track of him, and they found him dead.

I guess they are saying he had an enlarged heart. Poor guy, had a nice looking family and lots of friends. Just tragic.

Shortly before everyone lost contact with him, he spoke with a family member and said he was afraid and wanted to get off the river ASAP. He knew something was not right.

Toxicology report may be enlightening.

But maybe not.

As family member (father?) said, may never know.

I read it. Good for those who are not from West Michigan, but not much new to the story for those who have been following it.

Simply put, bad things happen to people and sometimes medical professionals never figure it out. Friend of mine spent a week in an Atlanta hospital after his friends woke up to him unconscious on the couch in their apartment. Called 911, after extensive testing, doctors determined he had a seizure, but they couldn't determine what caused his seizure.

It's likely the same thing happened to Cullen, though I am extremely discouraged by the response of his father, who had a very negative reaction to the thought that brain injuries from concussions sustained during football could have contributed to his death, largely because his father raised him in such a football-centric household. It's not his father's fault, but it is extremely disingenuous bordering naive to say there is NO WAY concussions played any part in his death (unless Cullen picked up bath salts or bad drugs, including pain pills, later in life).

Cullen had a few too many shots to the head during bar brawls, practices, games, 30 ft falls from ziplines (yikes) for it to not have had any impact on his death.

Sad story all around.

Cullen FInnerty's autopsy report has been issued. Sad end for the young man. http://www.mlive.com/news/grand-rapids/i...neumo.html

You could say he gave his life to GVSU football.

Sounds like a few too many hits to the head. I'm a little taken back by GVSU's response today: Condolences then straight into concussion defense. A little strong, I thought.

RIP Cullen

I took oxy at high doses for over 10 years and the anxiety and personality change can be huge. I became a different person and I know I had multiple undiagnosed concussions. I stopped taking oxy in 2009 because I was not myself anymore. I quit in one day and have never taken another oxy. Using suboxone you have about 6 hours of withdrawal then as long as u want to quit its easy. I am much better today and thankfully I never took an oxy that was not prescribed. My anxiety is gone and I am back to myself.

This could have easily been me. I feel for his young family.

What kind of anxiety and personality change does long term oxycotin use bring on?

I basically became ocd, I was always checking doors and windows to see if they were locked. I could not leave my house without looking at my dog and I had to cover up all the lights in the bedroom including clocks. I became grumpier than ever and I was paranoid of my family getting hurt.

It also gave me what's called central sleep apnea. Not fat guy apnea but my brain forgets to breathe when I am sleeping. It took 4 different nights of sleep tests to figure out what was wrong. I could sleep all day and night then fall asleep driving to work which I was doing almost everyday in 2009.

I also had crazy stomach pains that they couldn't diagnose including having a colonoscopy at 32 years old. It went away when I stopped taking the oxy.
