UAB Men's golf in the NCAA Tournament
The Blazers, given an at-large berth as the 10th seed, will tee it up May 16-18 in Baton Rouge against several SEC teams ( Fl, LSU, Ala ) among others. Lets hope that our great coach, who is retiring after this season, will be given a memorable performance by our guys.

As always, I hope UAB scores well.

Just a thought based upon our state's RTJ Golf Trail; Could the state's universities host a multi course collegiate tournament (similar to one of the pro tournaments played on 3 or 4 area courses) played on several courses with the top players after the first days (all having played each of the assigned courses once) playing the final day on one of the trail's most challenging courses (not involved in the first days)? It would promote the RTJ Trail as well as the state's universities on a national golfing stage.

Monday through Friday the players rotate through the same 5 courses and then those who "make the cut" could play the 6th course for the championship on Saturday.

Good question and I have no idea. I do know that every collegiate tournament during the season is team based and everyone makes the cut. Maybe a pre-season tournament would work as they are not always team oriented; however a 6 course tournament is very lengthy. The Pros do not play 6 courses in a week.

That sounds like torture. Mental, Physical and Emotional torture.

I could see a four day tournament with four different golf courses.

And we are +20 on the day tied for 10th out of 13 but only 8 shots out of the last qualifier position. On the individual sides of things, Wilson McDonald is tied for 13 at +2 or in 7th for the individual qualifier and the leader for individual qualification is Even.

The preseason (or the Winter Holidays) idea is a good concept since it would allow play during a week when schools might not be in session. The idea is to promote the variety of courses the Trail has to offer and that they are not all in one part of the state. I think it was the Bob Hope Tournament that was played over several courses during a week. Maybe a bus company like B'ham's Thrasher Brothers might provide the transport for the teams for advertising.

In other sports, every team doesn't "make the cut" to play in the conference tournament so that might not be a problem in golf. A first draft of any idea that is new may be altered as it is discussed and the interest of various state's schools is gauged. I just believe the idea is worth discussion by our state universities beyond "it has never been done before". There is also the possibility that the tournament might grow over years in collegiate golf to be an icon like Daytona is in NASCAR, Le Mans in Formula I racing or Omaha is for the College Baseball World Series.

Indeed, the blazers finish the day at +12. Eight shots better than yesterday's +20, making them +32 for the tournament and leaving them in 9th place. They are 11 strokes behind LSU and Coastal Carolina who are both tied for 5th. Hawkins shot -1 today leaving him +4 overall and T14 as an individual. Sam Love finished up 2 over for the day, bouncing back from yesterday's disappointing 82. The guys have some work to do tomorrow to finish up with a top 5 spot however today's improvement is promising.

Looks like this will be the end of the road for this year. Currently 13 back from 5th place.
