I can't wait for this to be a non-story in our society.

I guess that's one way to stay in the NBA for a few more years. Tell everyone your gay and then no one can cut you unless they want a bunch of gay people to show up and protest outside their arena. Then you really have a story. Then the commissioner has to step in and make sure he signs with a team so it doesn't give the NBA a black eye.

The first openly gay athlete in a major U.S. team sport, if I'm reading correctly. Pretty significant.
Don't think you are reading that correctly. And I posted the other day the 1st NFL player to announce he was gay.

It seems to me that a person's personal business is their own personal business and I just don't see why it matters to society as whole. Moreover, I have never equated this type of social issue with that of African Americans, because in most cases one can clearly see that African Americans have a physical attribute that identifies them as being of African heritage. Whereas the other group doesn't have any identifier that shows what their orientation is; moreover most of the world doesn't give a damn.

But a pretty shrewd move for an old guy probably near the end of his career. If no contract is offered for next year then he can sue the league/team for discrimination.

Yep, I'm sure that's what he is scheming to do.

I just don't understand when people say "it's not a big deal" or "it's nobody's business" when in reality it's a big deal. People have lost their jobs, denied housing, get beaten, etc because of their sexual orientation. It's still a big deal otherwise we wouldn't be arguing for or against gay marriage. I'm sure Collins knew his NBA career was pretty much over that's why he decided to come out of the closet. And as somebody stated previously, this won't be an issue once the Millennials take over.

Good for him. It is time we stop worrying about who someone loves and worry about not stealing rights of others, wasting talent just because of it, and start being interested in making the world less hostile for all.

I don't understand when people assume that most guys in America are a bunch of dumb baboons. Gay people have been around for a long time and they will be around for generations to come. People watch movies, theatre and listen to music; knowing full well that many of the artists are gay. It doesn't stop people from watching movies or listening to music; so why would anyone stop watching sports because of this?
To me to this all part of the in your face generation. The tats; loud music, piercings, slutty clothes for women/pants hanging down showing the underwear of the young men and just overall general boorish behavior that people are engaging in and calling it expressing themselves. Like most people; I can say that it is not my business what people do in their personal lives and I feel comfortable with that. Nothing wrong with modesty and just living and letting live.

I don't care because I don't care that he's gay. I don't care that my roommate is gay either. Labels are one of the main factors in perpetuating divisiveness.

Which was exactly my point. But unfortunately we don't live in a perfect world where people don't get labels (gay, fat, black, slut, etc). It will take another generation to get to that level.

Was Charles Barkley the first openly fat player?

Oh really? I heard that same stuff when Jim Crow ended and people were saying well our nation is going to hell in a hand basket because now those black people (actually used another word I don't use) are sub-human, stupid, lazy and inferior in all ways.
It is also sad to think because people don't have the same sexual orientation that they shouldn't have the same rights and while they can be used for their talents, they can't be allowed life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness that a hetrosexual person is entitled to. I served in 2 branches of the U.S. Military and I could swear I was part of trying to see that people had those three chances. I remember when if a white man dated a black woman (or vice versa) that both would suffer from those who didn't think mixed race dating was right, and many were cheated of enjoying a meaningful relationship because someone didn't care about those words in our constitution. I didn't serve this country and suffer each day from injuries I got in service to this nation to see people denied life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.

I gotta say, it will be very interesting to see who is the first athlete to openly come out as a slut
