Buy the name. I believe that there is precedent for that.

Only when they are willing to sell and the conference is willing to pay. When someone has deep pockets and someone else thinks that they need something very badly, then prices tend to rise fast. Ask Disney.

You shouldn't speak that way about Northwestern's athletic department!

Seriously though, that may have have had more to do with the fact that the BIG TEN didn't formally take the name until 1980, but had been using it for a long time. Assuming your high school conference took the name before 1980, but after the BIG TEN formally started using the name, then neither party had a good case. Otherwise, it may have had to do with the true owner not wanting to sue the other party. Had this gone to court, it might have ended up being like March Madness, which was made into a common phrase by the NCAA, but originated with Indiana High School basketball. The NCAA and Indiana share revenue derived from that name.

Yeah ~ they are a MA high school conference, they can easily change their name to the Massachusetts Eastern Athletic Conference, with the added advantage that in the end the MEAC will inherit the earth.

It is Illinois, not Indiana that came up with the phrase - coined in 1939 by someone from the Illinois HS Association.

Having the same initials is not the same intellectual property issue as having the same name. Another "American Athletic Conference" would be an issue. Another AAC isn't, unless their trademark bears too close a physical resemblance to the Appalachian's trademark.

As is applies to the conference formerly known as the BIG EAST, "AAC" stands for "American Athletic Conference." You gave me a link to the "Appalachian Athletic Conference." "American" and "Appalachian" are two different words. You gotta be careful! Those them there squiggilies can be confusn' being letters n' such.

Here is an article about the naming process....Aresco has indicated that they will be going by "The American" in marketing and branding...

Your high school was probably in the MAC and just played at Big 10 teams.

I don't see a scenario where our new site has "AAC" in the title. Too much mixmatch possibilities with the ACC and the Appy Conference.

JMHO of course, but we were always taught that " if you don't succeed, try try again.". That is what the Old BE/ACC is doing and I applaud them for it. Unhappy schools are gone and replaced by happy additions. They will have to make up some lost ground but so what... Good for them.

My word. You northerners certainly speak in an unusual and unfamiliar manner. 03-nerner
