RE: MSG vs. The Greensboro Coliseum
This is a Greensboro reporter trying to protect a money maker for the Greensboro economy. He found 1 guy in the entire ACC organization that doesn't want the tournament to move. I'm sure there are a few others but this hardly qualifies as "thinking small."

I think that's more a local rube thinking small.

Could the ACC and Big East share MSG? Is that even possible? The new ACC is capable of replicating the mojo of the current BET, but not if they're playing in some cornpone barn somewhere. [/city slicker mode]

I think he hits the nail on the head. I liked this quote.

"Every year at this time we hear from a lot of people who aren’t from around here, New York columnists and Syracuse basketball coaches and internet experts who love to write about the Denny’s on Tobacco Road (where is that anyway?) They all miss the point."

I think the new people need to come down for a couple of years and see how they like Greensboro. It might cause them to adjust their way of thinking.

Same could be said for the old people coming up to NYC though, too. There's a reason everyone talks about how "special" the BET is and the ACC's is just another conference tournament. I mean, don't get me wrong, I can't wait till we play in the ACC tournament but we're talking about being center stage, in the greatest city on Earth, in the greatest venue on Earth; every year. You got Bill Clinton visiting locker rooms and celebrities sitting in the crowd, not to be seen, but to simply watch a game. That's not to mention every media outlet sends their A team to cover the event.

I pray we at least get NYC in some sort of rotation with Greensboro.

MSG vs. The Greensboro Coliseum
There are two tournaments other commissioners want to be like ACC & Big East.

Going to Greensboro has never been about going to Greensboro it is about defending what you did in regular season or getting redemption for the regular season. It is an event where the attraction is the event.

MSG was selected to challenge the ACC tournament. It was a declaration that this the stage and by being on it we are worthy of it. Which the BE went on to prove with results.

Greensboro works because it is easily accessible to the schools who made the ACC Tournament an event. MSG works because it is the hallowed ground of the city that really made basketball a big time sport outside the few pockets of big support.

1. It isn't the same because you are joining the ACC, not merging with it. Pushing ideas hard when people don't even know you yet isn't wise or effective.
2. That statement is way off the mark. The ACCT is the most well regarded in the country. The BET doesn't even exist after this year and only ran for a few decades. That hardly makes it "special".
3. I visited NYC once. It is an interesting place to visit, but big doesn't = better.

1. I'm a fan, what I say doesn't matter
2. Perhaps I did undervalue you the ACCT but you're WAY undervaluing the BET
3. I think the vast majority of the country would agree with me on that one. I've visited NYC many many many many many times and have always regretted coming home.

Lots of empty seats at SEC games all year and at the tourney. "The SEC tournament had an attendance average of 17,441 three years ago in Nashville." Weak sauce.

We are not discussing the SEC on this thread. We are talking about the best venue for the ACC tourney. I was merely making a point. Just added the jalapenos for you...04-cheers

All the seats are sold, it is just a matter of people going and coming. The fans of the the schools that aren't playing are off playing golf, shopping, eating etc. They are in and out. When teams lose some fans go home, some sell their tickets or give them to someone. So if the implcation is that they can't sell out the arena that is incorrect. If you just mean that fans don't stay and watch all the games because their school isn't directly involved at the time that would be correct. There are no general fans there, unless they hung around and found some Clemson or VT ticket holders to sell them their tickets before they headed home. These are the big donors in attendance.

The BET isn't special! hahahahahaha OMG I'm crying over here. The BET tickets haven't gone out for general sale in 7 years. You can only get tix through secondary market. Thats SEVEN YEARS!!!!

No, the schools bought them, but not every school sold all of theirs.

In 2011 they had their 3rd consecutive non-sellout. This most likely continued the last two years.

So you actually think holding the ACCT in the far reaches of the footprint is going to lead to those schools selling more tickets to their donors, not less?

Again, how can it be that special if it doesn't even exist any more?

It does exist. Half the teams playing in it this year will be playing in it next year in the same building. 5 of the 10 schools next year have been in everyone of the BE tournaments held in MSG. How does that NOT exist?
