Question for new members of CUSA....
Time to start leaning more about your athletic programs. Lets start with football. In football what are some of your traditions that you have?

At USM our stadium is named the rock. Below is an explanation of where the name came from and some history of the Rock. Would like to know more about your traditions. I realize a school like UTSA is building tradition, but I still want to know someting about your program.

From what I've heard, they aren't very good but you always have to worry about them lobbing it over you.

Embarrassingly, we don't have too much tradition. But our tailgating scene is one of the best, localized on the hill outside, really cool. We also have the best band in college football. (We're a music school.)

I concur.

The Band of Blue is one of the best in college football.

Don't sell yourself short. "Mean" Joe Greene, J.T. Smith, and Coach Hayden Fry. There was a run of some very good football teams during the late 70's. I'm looking forward to a trip down there this season to see your new on-campus stadium. I was last there in 1978 and I'm sure the new improvements are as impressive up close as they are in the pictures.

Don't undersell us. We do have a few other traditions ...

* the newest one is a huge Eagle head the players touch when entering the field. It was bought by alumni.

* we have Boomer, a real cannon we fire off after scores. It tends to scare the heck out of folks not ready for it.

* The admin building is lit green after wins

Forgot about Boomer. The away section is so close, and they always crap their pants, or some have even complained. It's the best.

And, sorry, our band was the best in the SBC by far. Y'all's is good, but ours is one of the best.

RE: Question for new members of CUSA....
Legend of the Bulldog

The story takes place in the autumn of 1899 when five Tech students were returning home from school. They came upon an old, hungry bulldog sitting under a tree. The boys fed the dog with what food they had and continued their journey.

When they finally reached their destination, however, they found that the dog had followed them. Being sensitive young men, they sought permission for the dog to stay the night, and the landlord agreed - if the animal remained in the kitchen.

That night the house caught fire.

Their overnight guest was the first to awaken. The dog ran from room to room, rousing everyone in the building. Then, after all the other occupants had made their way to safety, one boy remained inside. The bulldog re-entered the smoke-filled house in an apparent attempt to rescue him, not realizing the boy had escaped in a different direction.

After the fire was extinguished and smoke had finally cleared, the boys went inside to see if the dog had indeed made it out to safety. But when they entered, they found the lifeless bulldog lying in an unburned corner of one room. He had died from the smoke and the heat.

Naturally, the young men were shaken due to the death of their new friend. So they picked him up and carried him to the place they had found him the previous day. They then dug a grave and wrapped him in two jackets - one red and the other blue.

When the boys returned to school and related their story, the whole campus mourned the death of the homeless dog. The dog with no name had found a place in the hearts of Tech students.

Two years later, Tech organized a football team and decided the team needed not only school colors, but a mascot. A unanimous decision was reached as the bulldog, the first hero of Tech, was given the honor.

We also have the Walk of Pride 3 hrs prior to kickoff on gameday, where the football team busses into the tailgating area to be met by the fans and the band. The band leads the football team through our tailgate and into the north endzone.
