Bottom line, anything's better than the Sun Belt
'"If Georgia Southern is “tired of slummin’” in the Southern Conference, as one angry fan told me last fall, the Eagles better avoid the Sun Belt neighborhood like it’s a crackhouse at the end of a dead-end street."

Georgia Southern folks - do you claim this clown?

What a moron. It amazes me that some "writers" can find work when they have no clue whatsoever.

Go look at the guy's work. He isn't even a sports writer. I can see why.

They'll either be SBC or FCS. If they are SBC get your printers running. This guy is good for years of bulletin board material.

Absolutely not. He's anti-FBS, but he's also not even a sports writer. Before the FBS talk, he just bashed Georgia Southern directly.

The same article spawned a thread on our board and no one agrees with the guy. He's a hack.

If you're going to read something out of Savannah, Donald Heath is the go-to guy.

Not at all. 01-wingedeagle

He only writes negative stories about GSU athletics. We are use to it at this point. He knows he can get more hits on his page with a negative article.

If/When we get a SBC invite, he will probably write another article about how its "the worst decision GSU athletics has ever made since starting a football program".

If I remember correctly, he wrote an article that had to do with him driving some beater for years.

It is obvious from reading this article that this guy knows little about FBS football conferences so consider the source. I got a visual image of this guy from his unresearched and unfounded article as one who hikes his pants up above his navel so they ride up in his butt crack and he sits around in his silk boxers scratching his smellyvagina when he thinks no one is looking . . . 03-puke 03-lmfao 03-puke

This guy is not a GaSouthern fan or supporter. He is a former GT beat writer who bashes GaSo at every turn. We try our best to ignore the clown. I was waiting on him to write something anti-fbs/sun belt. Just like a small number of GT/UGA fans his against us moving up.

There are a few nuts in Savannah, this guy must be one of them. Beautiful historic city and great people, but if you go to enough bars you will meet one or two.

He can have / state his opinion even if it is dumb, but teams like App, GaSo, Jax St, Liberty, Etc. will take the SBC with a big grin for sure if invited.

Maybe I'm reading it different, I get the feel the writer is comparing the SB to a new FBS league. The new league would offer the advantages of a closer footprint and being competitive sooner. Stating that GaSo and other new FCS teams would/will have a tough time for a few years is very realistic. Playing one or two FBS teams is quite different that a full schedule. Physically and emotionally the full schedule will wear you down.

The lower level FBS conferences that maintain a tight footprint will be able to use the extra funds to improve facilities which draw athletes.

Using ODU situation is a little unfair to GaSo as the market desires of CUSA and the SB differ greatly. GaSo most likely doesn't interest the CUSA at this time because of no FBS history and a small market.

The subject of the lower level FBS being the new DII in the public's eye is bantered around on several forums. Which in my estimation will be true. The desire to maintain being in the second level by larger public schools seems to be ok with the writer.

Anyways I didnt read the slam on the SB into the article as much as some other have just a understanding of where we all stand in the perception game.

Trying to decide which is funnier: the fact that he's unaware that creating a new conference is not an option or that he referred to Chattanooga as a 'tradition-rich' FCS program.

His loophole (form your own league and invite yourself) reminds me of the tax preparer who advised his client to file a schedule F because the client had an apple tree in the front yard. The cost of watering and fertilizing it was a "farm expense".

The IRS got wise to that and a number of other phantom deduction cases and made him a guest of the Federal Bureau of Prisons.

What is important at this point is Georgia Southern's response. Go on the offensive and defend the Sun Belt while pointing out the error or hunker down pretend to be a happy contented member of the Southern Conference and ignore it.

That will tell us a lot about what sort of member the Eagles will be.

Are you looking for an official response from the school? Cause that won't happen. Our fans have already mocked the article and defended the SBC.

I'm positive he reads GSUfans.com and he knows his articles get destroyed by us. We have a thread about it right now.

He knows he draws us to his page and generally he gets feed back at the bottom of his blog.

I don't see how it can be seen as anything other than an ill informed slam of the Sun Belt. If Ga. So., App. St. and perhaps JMU come onboard together now, they have a better chance of succeeding than most FCS startups because of the other teams moving up. The same is true for ODU, UTSA and UNCC. Add to that the fact that those schools can all schedule each other as non-conference in a few years and you have the perfect time to move up.

There are growing pains but Troy and WKU have shown that it takes only a little time to be competitive.

As for the "perception" goes, if you win a lot of games and go to bowl games your perception will be fantastic regardless of your conference. Just look at the few members that remained in the WAC this year. USU, SJSU and LT had not been all that fantastic the last few years but they were all perceived very well despite playing very soft schedules.

Heck, NIU had the softest schedule in the nation and made a BCS game.

Get into FBS, use the extra scholarships wisely and win. That is all that you have to do in any conference.

This is where the administration calls the paper's publisher and says "Guy is messing with our options to grow" and asks that a friendly member of the sports staff write a rebuttal column.
