GSU count as FBS game?
I'm sure its been answered many times before but I couldn't find anything on it. Will the game against Georgia St count as a FBS or FCS game? I'm not sure where GSU is at in their transition. Most Sun Belt teams already have FCS games scheduled that would count towards bowl eligablity, so I was curious.
Not trying to flame.

I was just wondering that myself. I thought they were first year transitional, if so they would count the same as an FCS win. I honestly don't know for sure though.

RE: GSU count as FBS game?
They will play a full conference slate this year and count as an FBS team. They will not be eligible for a conference championship or bowl game until 2014 season.

I was under the impression that the NCAA ruled last summer that all FCS transitional teams would be immediately eligible for bowl participation.

That was only put in place for last year because of the number of teams that were ineligible for bowls due to penalties. There should be enough bowl teams to go around this year.

No, they ruled that second-year transitional teams could be eligible for bowls if there weren't enough eligible teams even after going through other contingencies (6 wins with two FCS victims, 6 wins with one non/reduced-scholarship FCS team, 6-7 but reached the conference title game).
I think Georgia State might have started its transition while playing a full CAA slate so this will be their second season and thus they'll be considered FBS for scheduling purposes. ODU could have been on the same schedule, but they delayed increasing their scholarship count a year so they could have one more shot at an FCS title, which didn't work out, thank you VERY much More Accomplished GSU.

I believe GSU is in the exact same position USA was in this year.

Yup, exactly. Since they are, conference teams can schedule an FCS opponent and not have to worry about the possibility of only being able to count one win towards eligibility (should you beat a FCS team and GSU). Not a slam against GSU, but I don't think they'll come in and set the league on fire right off, they will improve in the next few years, but that should help the top teams with bowl eligibility.

RE: GSU count as FBS game?
1) Georgia State counts as a FBS game for its opponents
2) GSU would only be eligible for bowl eligibility as a year one transitional program if all FBS eligible teams have been taken and all 5 win FBS teams with appropriate team GPA's have been taken. And then they would have to be otherwise FBS bowl eligible. And then Old Dominion would be in competition with them for that bowl slot. In other words, very doubtful that GSU would be bowling
3) Georgia State remains ineligible for the Sun Belt championship next year.

#3 is interesting in that CUSA just made ODU eligible for the 2014 conference championship.

#2 is interesting since we will be in our second transitional year and Old Dominion will be in their first transitional year.

ODU if they can find a defense could finish in the top three of what remains in that conference. Their QB and skill players on offense are excellent. Wonder if that was agreed to when they joined?

I wouldn't slam GSU and mark them as an "auto-W" either. Wasn't too long ago my USA Jags assumed it was an "auto-W" and the Panthers... well, just BRUNG IT. I'm leary of the Jags heading to Atlanta for our SBC opener. Good news is there are lots of fine watering holes to get over the butthurt if it should happen again (and it should NOT happen again) in HotLanta

Are you really serious? ODU hasn't had an FBS recruiting class yet, have they? If they have, it's only 1 and I don't think they are at their full compliment of FBS scholarships yet, either. I'm fairly certain they could not add any and still be eligible for the FCS playoffs, which they were particpants in.
They didn't do well in the FCS playoff this year and you have them finishing 3rd in CUSA? They didn't even have an FBS opponent this year. Fact is, they haven't played an FBS since they brought the program back in 2009.
They have a lot of catching up to do to be regarded that well. Depth is a killer.

I completely agree. I'm not a CUSA apologist, but no way would ODU finish in the top 3, let alone, I doubt they would be bowl eligible. Don't get me wrong, I think the direction of ODU is positive and I think they have a really good coach and great philosophy, but no way on earth are they gonna jump to FBS with no problems at all.
