I'm well aware of that. UAB won the regular season basketball championship 2 years ago but didn't win the tourney. I like recognizing both.

Recognizing "regular season champions" is lame. Championships are decided through tournaments and playoffs.

USM will probably win baseball. They MIGHT win basketball. No chance in hell they win football. You don't just bounce back from an 0-12 season like that. I have no doubts USM will be back... but those wounds need time to heal.

lame? So you think it's more important to win 3 (or 4 games) than it is to win through the regular season?

No way.. (IMO). any team can get hot during the "postseason". Do it consistently over a few month period. I'd take the regular season champ over the tourney champ as the better team overall.

IMHO, recognizing a regular season champion isn't lame. It's not the official way a champion is determined today, but it isn't lame. I fully realize that tournaments are required for income purposes, but they cheapen the conference season.

Officially, the conference can choose what the process is for determining its champion, and that champion is the one that gets a bid to the NCAA MBB, WBB, basketball, etc tournaments.

Therefore, the recognized champion is the tournament winner. Obviously there are at-large bids at stake, but from a championship perspective, the entire conference schedule is played for the sole purpose of conference tournament seeding. I don't particularly like it, but that's not changing as long as there's money to be made in the tournament process.

I think we have the hoops title (regular season) in our sights. Sweeping Memphis would be a nice touch. Winning the conference tourney will be hard.

I see us as an "at large" participant in the big tourney, 10-15 seed, andI don't see us winning a game (unless we have to win a "play in").

We'll see about baseball. There are a lot of other good CUSA teams.

I'm very pessimistic about football. I know people don't like that and I apologize. I will be going to the games... Texas State is already planned.

I just don't see how you could be a 15 seed with an at large bid. If you're strong enough to get an at large bid, you'll be higher than 15. 15-16 seeds are for smaller conference champions that have little or no chance of advancing.

I wouldn't discount UTEP in the conference race and tournament. USM/Memphis/UTEP games should be fun. They certainly have been the last few years.

A ten seed is probably more realistic. You're right about who gets the 15s, 16s, and play-ins. (Can a CUSA team even get a play-in?)

Our RPI has been in the high 30s, which would translate to a 9-10 if strictly followed.

An RPI in the 30s should get a pretty high seed if the committee looks at everything objectively, which (in my biased opinion) has been unlikely for any of us.

Wasn't UAB in one of those odd-ball opening round games in 2011?

Why can't USM win football this coming fall?

We bring in an offensive coach who's offense averaged 49 points AFTER losing a first round QB and WR. To put it in perspective, Fedora's offense scored 49 points once his last year at OK State.

On Defense, we return the mastermind behind our 2011 Defense as DC. He will have the players ready to play this year.

Our S&C Coach has the boys getting back in shape and, to the joy of the fans, he's not telling our players to use steroids(looking at you real estate man).

You guys do realize you nearly lost to an Eagle team that had coaches that couldn't scratch their own backsides last year. Will be different in 2013. Not to mention we will have you guys right where we want you...at your place.

It's not that we can't. It's that going from 0-12 to the conference champs would be a monumental turnaround.

RE: i am just gonna go ahead and call it
I am proud of where our basketball team is but we still have 2 very big games with Memphis, not to mention the rest of the conference schedule to be played, so we still have a ways to go to finish the deal. Baseball, USM is a solid baseball program and has plenty of returning talent, but they aren't the only ones that can be major factors in who wins the title. Sure I believe USM can, but Rice, UAB, Tulane, who knows but some dark horse could surprise all of us. Football, yep I think USM will return to it's perch as one of the teams that will be hanging around the title room late in the season to grab the trophy, but we got some issues on defense and while I feel Monken will get the offense up again very fast, the question is how far along can he take us in year one.

The future of our programs are bright, and we could win the title in each sport, and it is a great feeling to know your teams have a shot at a title no matter what sport.

One game at a time folks. One game at a time. If anything, Ellis's 0-12 should have instilled some humility in USM fans. I love all of our coaches in all 3 major men's sports now and I believe they will all be successful, but one game at a time.
