Florida Toll Roads
Have not spent a lot a time driving in Florida, but their toll road system sucks. I found myself in an unmanned booth demanding exact change and only exact change. Needless to say, with a line of impatient honking cars, I drove thru without paying. Now, I've got to pay a 100.00 late fee for a .75 cent toll.
I've never been on a toll system that didn't have some kind of a mechanism for either a credit card, manned booth, or some way to slip in a dollar bill and get change in return. Oh well, at least I wasn't eaten by one of the ever burgeoning population of Burmese Pythons slithering around.
General, please correct any spelling or grammar mistakes, they are no doubt numerous. Thanks for your vigilance in keeping the board mistake free.

Florida in general is America's shltpipe, so I'm not surprised. Tolls are the future of America. Get used to them.

Yup, hate 'em.
Hate all of 'em anywhere technically, but they're far more tolerable where my E-ZPass works!

If you don't plan to visit Florida again, don't pay it. They aren't going to chase you down.
Florida likes to think it is a great place to live because they have no state income tax. The truth is that they nickel and dime you to death. Toll roads are all over FL and they are damn expensive. Gas taxes are high, sales tax is high. I have to go there often because my son, his wife, and my grandson live there. Always very happy to cross that border on the way back home!

For future reference, if you don't have change for a toll you can usually put in your license and pay it online

Drove from Ft Myers to Miami recently. Most all tolls through that rout are going to a camera based system. Drive right through and they took pics of my plate each time. Got a bill for the tolls about a week later. That said. I am tired of living here and plan on moving back north this summer.

I love Toll Roads as they are paid for on the backs of people who actually use them.

That's a great point.
In Tennessee the sales tax is high but there is no income tax.
To your point, all taxes from purchases are generated by the people who actually use them....cars, clothing, restaurants, houses, etc. Those with money pay higher taxes based on the more expensive purchases made.
This seems more equatable in my eyes. Of course, I like hearing the other side.

I know, it's all good, I was responding in kind.
With respect to toll roads, I agree with CharmCity, it's a way for users to pay for the roads, I travel lot on both Ohio and Indiana toll roads. I just don't like toll roads that hand-cuff the consumer that way that Florida does.

Are the Indiana Toll Road tolls still dirt cheap? When I was last on one in 2008, I believe it was $5 to go from one end to the other.

There is a huge storm brewing in Virginia as the Commwealth's roads and infrastructure is crumbling, yet no one wants to pay for its upkeep. The incompetent Gov has suggested eliminating the dwindling gas tax and jacking up the sales tax because it is more politically popular than, you know, MAKING DRIVERS PAY FOR THEIR USE OF THE ROADS!
Drivers in metro DC are the most selfish people on the face of the earth.

Yeah, I got nailed on the Bee-Line Expressway (I think they renamed it recently) a few years ago. I should've known better from having lived down there a couple years a while back. I don't think it was as high as $100, though. Maybe $25?

I agree. It's a user fee. I often wonder if it'll come to Michigan. I-94 seems like a viable candidate as any. I gather it'd be political suicide to mention, but the upside is (usually) better maintained roads and 'should' keep taxes allocated to road repair from rising.

I'd love to be on the Gulf Coast - anywhere from Sarasota to Naples - right about now. If you don't mind an 'older' population, SW Florida is awesome. I know it's cliche, but there's no question I'll at least spend the heart of winters down there when I retire. By the time I hit my 60s, which is quite a ways off, I'll be so done with ice and snow.

Use my Sunshine Pass all the time to zoom around Florida. You can avoid the toll roads with a little effort. I-75, I-95 and I-4 are examples of directional roads that can generally get you around the state. The Beach Line (old Bee Line) is a short toll road running between Orlando and I-95. I love Michigan and always will but living in Florida is dream come true for me.

Illinois has its share of unmanned booths requiring exact change (as they count it). Sometimes another dime or quarter is required (slush fund) but they do have signs that kindly ask if you want to call or go on line to pay your missed toll before they send you the $100 fine.
