When will they win?
So - we all know this has been a dismal season.

I wanted to talk about something other than our one hot topic thread right now.

ODU fans - when will our next win come? What is your prediction?

For me, (and I know this is wishful thinking) I would LOVE LOVE LOVE to take out JMU this weekend. They (fans) talk so much trash, I love putting them in their place when our teams meet. It would be all the sweeter if our worst team possibly ever goes and beats them in their house.

If I'm being realistic, it's prob more like W&M at home later in the sched.

What's your prediction?

RE: When will they win?
Back in November I thought our next home win was going to be against Towson. However, I don't think we'll see another win at home until UNCW comes to town. As far as road wins? I think they could beat JMU. JMU beat us then lost @ Hampton the next game. Hampton is having a horrible season similar to ours. If they can do it, why can't we, right?

I doubt we'll see 5 wins this year. maybe 2 more wins against UNCW and @JMU, but I can't pick a school other than maybe Hofstra that I can have confidence in beating.

It will be when we least expect it. Just look at the Virginia game - who expected that?

I have little confidence we will beat Hofstra. I give it 50/50. I do think we will likely win another game this season, just can't predict when.

Honestly, right now, I don't see the Monarchs winning another game.

UNCW. Maybe at Hofstra. W&M has lost 7 straight.

RealtimeRPI has us beating Towson and Northeastern. Not gonna happen.

RE: When will they win?
I certainly didn't. Anyone see UVA take FSU to the woodshed over the weekend? I could not fathom how we beat them.

A hot-handed Batten certainly helps. Anyone give a good reason why he doesn't start games? This whole bring him off the bench thing seems like lunacy. Oh well....don't wanna turn this into another bash the coach thread.

Yes, Batten needs to shoot more oftenand I would also like to see Painter shoot more 3s. He is hitting 42%. Maybe if he played some more around the perimeter, it would loosen the inside a little and give him the option of shooting or driving, like how we played before the Frank and Coop classes and our forwards could hit 3s (Alex, Dahi, VV). I honestly think this is a case of laziness. We didn't start playing rockfight ball to this extreme until 2008. He has tinkered with the playbook before to his talent to an extent, and won't do it again for whatever reason. The whole problem with the offense is Painter and Wright (or whoever) just stand inside and battle for position, but they never move. This is pretty easy to defend against.

RE: When will they win?
especailly when Wright has no chance of beating anyone of consequence on the inside.

And Painter can't hit the ocean from 2-7 feet it seems.

If our gaurds aren't making threes we simply have no offense. The only semblance of scoring comes off the break, and we so rarely push tempo that our scoring droughts are just atrocious. Wish we could see some changes there.

Preferably we will beat Mason at home, thus assuring them a 16 seed should they happen to win the tourney.

RE: When will they win?
The problem with our offense isn't Painter. A big is SUPPOSED to stand inside and battle for position. He's doing his job and doing it well, given he's just about the only bright spot out there. It's everyone else's job to be in motion and create open passes, open lanes, and open shots. They don't pass well, they don't drive well, and they don't shoot well. None of our guards have been consistent this season. Hill and Batten have been big disappointments, and that is the "main" problem with our offense. Add in the fact that we have three freshman playing massive minutes and making freshman mistakes, it's just a recipe for disaster.

I think we have the best chances of beating JMU this weekend, then either William and Mary or UNCW in our home games against them.

I hope nobody else is misunderstanding me. The problem is not Painter, it is how he is being used. Disagree that bigs should not be moving in the offense. When your opponent can get away with simply stacking the paint, you have to try something new. Just thinking back on some of the more successful bigs we have seen in the CAA: VV, Dahi, Alex, Lee, Jamie Skeen and Jevonte Reddick at VCU, none of them literally stood around the paint doing nothing. Frank and Coop did, true, but Painter has a different skillset. He is not as good of a rebounder and has an average post game, but he can shoot. He ought to be popping out every so often and taking 3s to keep the defense honest. This would also open up the lanes for our guards and make it possible for them to finish their drives if the the defense was forced to follow Painter outside.

Completely agree. Painter has much more finesse as a big than we're used to from BT recruiting. He has a great 10 ft jumper. I would rather see him pulling the trigger on a half dozen 3s than Wright any day.

We won't win another game until Blaine decides to push the pace of our offense. We simply don't have the skill, size, toughness or ability to continue to run Blaine's slow it down, half court, feed the post offense.

Unless we completely change strategies, which Blaine has shown no inclination to do whatsoever, we will continue to lose games and lose them badly.

Alex, VV, Lee and Dahi all went to the top of the key because one they could beat their man off of the dribble and B they weren't the only post threat on the entire roster.

Painter has a nice midrange game but then he absolutely has to make about 60 percent of those shots because nobody is rebounding his misses and he's not drawing fouls on those attempts.

Could it hurt to try it at this point? I mean what is there to lose? What is the point in keeping him under the basket for rebounding when we can't make the put cutbacks anyway?

I agree and wish there was more flexibility but it's not his thing. He believes that his teams get better each season because they improve at their system. He's real big on improving by mass repetition.

This year the system is broken and everyone knows it.

I disagree the only time our offense looks good is went we push the ball. After the half court defense sets up. We turn into a team who doesn't take open shot, passes it and waits for the shot clock to wind down. Then we throw up an ugly shot.
