Sam Bowie documentary on ESPN
This documentary is running as a part of the SEC Storied series. It's a pretty good program and has aired a few times across the ESPN networks.

This is most definitely Blazer related, because they talk about the 1981 UAB Kentucky game at about the 26 minute mark. They show a good 30 - 40 seconds of footage. I did not know, and apparently no one else did, that he was playing that game with a broken tibia.

Yep, I remember that he missed an entire season because of his tibia.

Just a note. This isn't a 30 for 30. You will need to search your listings under SEC Storied

I recall a video clip of him breaking one of his legs during warm up before a game, and him laying on the floor in sheer agony, and that leg broken and bent in a most horrifying way. Hated that for him, I actually liked him and wanted him to thrive in the NBA.

According to the program, he fell in the Vanderbily game about a month before the UAB game. He had a stress fracture, but didn't know it and continued playing on it. It was discovered after the season and he missed a year of his college career.

He was drafted ahead of Michael Jordan, but he states in the video that he knew he wasn't 100%. He broke his leg again in the pros and missed another year or so. On the day he was to return to action, he broke his leg again in the pre game warmups. I think that is the video you are referring to of him banging the floor, which he said was more frustration than pain.

Would he have been more healthy if he had the surgery done today versus back then due to better technology?

IIRC, Charles Barkley played against both Bowie and Melvin Turpin in college, and made it perfectly clear that he didn't like either one of them, he played "light's out" basketball on UK. Barkley went out of his way to destroy them both on the court. Neither one of them could handle Barkley in the low post or on the boards.

Bowie was a very good player before he broke his leg. He had many games where he dominated. He was never the same.

Agreed. I enjoyed watching him play. It seems there's a "curse" on all of the centers that have ever played for the Portland TrailBlazers.
