If Chancellor Whitt tells the presidents of the forming conference that UAB will announce the construction of a new stadium next year, then we stand a chance. Otherwise, we can say goodbye to USM, UTEP, and Tulsa... Possibly ODU and Charlotte... Maybe Marshall.

In other words, we don't stand a chance in you know where.

I'll say it again: drop football and beg any basketball conference with a pulse to take us. Seems like our only chance.

Well, now that you've said it more than once, you can stop now.

Football has been our albatross. The UA BOT has never given UAB football a fighting chance. Their golden calf is UAT football.

RE: Sources: 7 leaning to leave Big East
Worst case scenario (I actually don't think it will get this bad), UAB gets forced into FCS temporarily. Joins the remnants of the A-10 after the Catholics raid them, football goes to CAA. It might be a blessing in disguise if we can win at the FCS level and rejoin FBS, but that's iffy.

RE: Sources: 7 leaning to leave Big East
Well even though schools have been invited to the Big East, if there isn't a conference left to join, they will have to remain where they currently are.

So if the 7 decide to split, they will likely do so by June 30th of this year, and then the schools going to Big Ten, ACC, etc will also do so, so the 6 schools that are set to leave C-USA probably won't, only 4 set to leave at this years end. Mainly because only Cincy, USF and Uconn will be the remaining schools. Not overly attractive, and they will need 8 to remain a football conference. This is the main reason I think the BE only has a 35% chance of survival.

While I think some great rivalries with some of those former C-USA schools would be great, being in a regionally logical league to me is more important. If you can't travel to games regularly somewhat easily then creating rivalries will be difficult, and the better the rivalries, the better the attendance, that leads to better coverage and a greater TV draw and bigger TV $$.

RE: Sources: 7 leaning to leave Big East
Most of the schools that left CUSA for the Big East thought they were better than us & the schools left behind.

The negotiations for contracts with the Big East show that they aren't.

If you aren't in one of the Big 5 (or soon to be Big 4) conferences, you are on the same ship as all others not in the Big 5. Meaning, it does not matter if we play La Tech & the F_U's or if we play Cincy & South Florida. In football, there is no difference. Yes, we know there is in basketball for some schools, but this isn't what is driving the ship, in case you haven't noticed.

UAB can turn into a VCU or Creighton all we have to do is drop our football program if we were going to get a new stadium that would be a different story.

You can joke, but can anyone deny that our football program being in the state it's in has held us back?

Belonging to the BOT it does has held us back.

Right. And let's be honest, does anyone really think the BOT cares about basketball?

So your logic is that we should drop football because the BOT doesn't care about basketball?

No. My logic is that the BOT will never let football succeed. I don't think they care about anything else.

Depends on what your definition of succeed is.

If you are talking about complete autonomy, then no.

I still believe the program can achieve in spite of the BOT.

Actually, the best 30 years they've had at the crapstone have coincided with the life of UAB's basketball program, making it appear as though they started giving a damn about basketball right around the time we started playing it.

The question is, why do YOU disdain UAB football so much? With friends like these...
