The 2nd part of the season: The Conference Season
One month out from the start of the conference season, I thought I'd start a thread about our team, and the rest of the ASUN.

To start this discussion, Bartow announced on the call-in show that Jarvis is now eligible will and will be back for the Ole Miss game. Jarvis will add experience, athleticism, and another perimeter scorer. With Lester and Rashawn shooting 40% from beyond the arc, Jarvis will add another 35%+ 3-pt shooter. As our team's lone senior, Jarvis' return will impact this team more than his career 4.5 ppg might indicate.

Great news about Jarvis. We needed another guy who could put it in the hoop.

This is a big deal. Not only does it give us another body, and a senior, but it allows us to play more "in position" than we have been.

Great news... Has Jarvis been able to participate in practice?

Good news about Jarvis, does anyone know if Petey will be back for Ole Miss? We really need him back at the point, especially after seeing how much Mario struggled against UNC.

Yes he's been practicing the entire season, and has shown a great deal of improvement from all indications.

It's important to remember that Jarvis has had the misfortune or fortune, depending on one's perspective, of playing behind some terrific guards. He started his career playing behind Pigram, and later played behind Tubbs and Micah Williams.

The good-natured Jarvo has a golden opportunity to lead this team full of youngsters.

Bucster,

Bartow said on the coaches show that Petey will not return for Ole Miss game. It sounds like Petey may be back for the tournament in Hawaii, though he may not return until the start of the new year.

I have felt from some time that FGCU was the class of the ASC. Beyond that Mercer, UNF, USCU would be competitive. I have not changed my opinion.

how long is "from some time"? dude, hope its not been for too long. i checked and last year fgcu went 15-17, year befor 10-20, and year b4 that 8-21.

ill give ya back to july of this year when belmont-the-beacon-of-basketball-truth left for greener ohio vallies. this year fgcu might be good, and so will a bunch of others without belmont beating the ever loving life out of every one

I don't remember a 5th year senior ever being academically ineligible before.

RE: The 2nd part of the season: The Conference Season
Mercer beat Florida State and lost by only 3 to Wake Forest (74-71) and George Mason (52-49) at neutral sites. Wake and George Mason were played without team leader Langston Hall who missed the first five games with an ankle injury and has not yet played up to his level of last year. With Hall playing at last year’s level, they win both those games. They are still my top ASun pick with the best balance of inside and outside game, offense and defense, size inside and solid guard skills. Most importantly, this extremely experienced team learned how to win in the CIT Tournament last postseason.

FGCU is 6-4 with wins over Miami, Toledo and Samford and losses to Duke, VCU, St. Johns and Iowa State. All 4 losses were on the road. Athletic 6’9” Iowa State transfer Eric McKnight has been a big improvement over Kevin Cantinol in the post, though not the dominator that I thought he could be. At least not yet. Mercer still gets the nod with better wins than FGCU so far.

USCU’s athleticism and UNF’s experience and perimeter play make them tough, although they haven't been able to make their mark in the early season as Mercer and FGCU have.

Biggest surprise so far has been 4-4 Lipscomb’s high scoring start with wins over Tennessee Tech, Gardner-Webb and UT Martin. While not nearly as badly hit by losses as ETSU, this team has turned a rebuilding year into something hopeful. I had them pegged for the bottom. Instead, they will not be easy to beat.

Look at those records – despite the loss of Belmont the ASun is an improved league this year. Conference play will not be easy.

RE: The 2nd part of the season: The Conference Season
I was waiting for someone else to comment. While I don't agree with the Bartow "bashers" that the coach should be held responsible for Sheldon and Marcus' incident nor should he be called out because players get hurt in practice (saw Kyrie Irving last night playing for Cleveland Cavaliers who was hurt all of his one year last year at Duke). BUT I do call the coaching staff out for allowing a guy that's been on campus for 5 years to become ineligible. That's not something that would "sneak up" you IMO. Am glad he's back.

You have to try pretty hard to become ineligible when majoring in sports management...

but anyways, do you think Jarvis will be running the PG until Petey gets back? He seems like our only adequate ball handler at this point.

Hopefully, don't get me wrong I like Mario but he really struggled running the point at UNC and it's discouraging to hear that Petey might even miss the Hawaii tournament.

RE: The 2nd part of the season: The Conference Season
soooo...there are those that believe (murray included) that a guy that averaged 6 ppg last year and is academically ineligable as a fifth year senior majoring in sports managment is going to come in a lead this team? playing the point at times no less. as much as i hope jarvis can step to that level, i wouldnt count on it. the bucs will be 2 and 11 (maybe 3-10) heading into the asun sched. they will finish below mercer, fcgu, uscu, lips, and battle unf and jax for the 5th spot...AT BEST.

you guys are expecting murray to do something he has yet to do since he has been here. thats coach...or at least devise an offensive scheme that puts kids in a position to score.

RE: The 2nd part of the season: The Conference Season
He should make a significant impact in league play, but I expect some rust against Ole Miss on Friday. He hasn't played in an actual Division I game since March 2nd, after all. Hopefully he can also mentor Lester on some of the finer points of defense, since he desperately needs the help there.

Really, the league schedule is all that matters in any given year for ETSU. If we don't win the conference, whether it be SoCon, OVC, A-Sun or Big South or wherever else we could realistically end up, there is no chance of us going to the NCAA Tournament. If we win the conference tournament, all these early season blowout losses like the one to JMU will be forgotten.

Not expecting anything more than a middle of the pack ASUN season. Definitely not expecting Jarvis to come in and save the day, but what other option do we have at PG right now?

thats the problem. your expectations are too low. the ovc could very well get two teams in this year.

i dont forget the blowout losses to lesser teams/programs nor do i forget scoring 12 or 14 points in a half. i expect more
