NIU's Dave Doeren accepts NCST job
Well, that was quick. We lost Kill in three years and Doeren in two. Maybe our new head coach will set a record and leave after one season.

NC State: We have confirmed that Debbie Yow interviewed Northern Illinois head coach Dave Doeren earlier today. Update> Sources tell us Doeren has accepted the job.

I wish coaches would stick around to coach their team in a bowl instead of abandoning them for the biggest game of the year.

Still better than Corso did.

Yea, pretty frustrating. 2nd time in 3 years for us.

What's a better job, Minnesota or NCSt? I think they're equally underwhelming. If our coaches are gonna leave at least do it for something more legit.

The NCAA could make a rule that universities can't talk to other coaches until after the national championship game. Doesn't the NFL have a rule like this?

Who am I kidding, the NCAA would never do anything that makes sense...

Or at least until their team is done for the year.

All this means is that NIU is doing something right. Kind of a "good" problem to have, I suppose.

sucks. lets see how good the SEC would be if their best coaches left every couple of years.

Wow. That was fast.

I wonder why AD's give permission to talk to coaches under contract before the season is over, or at least until the conference championship is over. MAC AD's have to know that the conference is a stepping stone, so don't (and shouldn't) get in the way. But why don't they say "call him after the championship game" or "call him after the bowl." The later is especially true after a BCS Bowl.

Think of how upset Doeren would be if he learned Lynch was talking early exit strategies instead of prep for the MACC? Why can't players expect the same of coaches?

Reports are he'll be making $1.8 million. This website is reporting that he made $450k at NIU. So he will be making 4x as much money at NC St. Not too shabby.

At some point we will get unlucky. Kind of hard to sustain success at a high level when you lose your head coaching and most of the coaching staff every 2-3 years.

If he's lucky, maybe he will find the NCSt. job is a steppingstone to a job as Akron's defensive coordinator, like...

Much success to him, it's hard to turn down 4X your income. Not only that, if the Big 10 & SEC fulfill their drives to 16 teams each, NC ST would be one of the programs the SEC would add. With the additional income that NCST would receive from an SEC TV contract, his income will only increase.

Hope he leaves at least some of his staff here and doesn't poach any of the recruits NIU staf have been talking to

So I take it he's not staying for our bowl game. We're obviously chopped liver since DD stayed at Wisconsin for their bowl game.

Rose Bowl vs. Potato Bowl/GMAC Bowl/etc....

And would you really want a HC who is not 100% for your team coaching in the bowl game? He would be getting his staff together at NC St., recruiting, moving. He wouldn't be recruiting for NIU, so that would kill NIU's recruiting.
