rankings
polls are out and no mac teams are ranked
coaches poll has rutgers at 25 and the team w the identical record that just pounded them at home, kent st, unranked
toledo stays at 26 in ap poll even though a bunch of teams in front of them lost.
niu still treading water around #30 in both
ohio lost most of their votes after a close road rivalry loss to 4-4 team
funny thing is ball st and bg might be able to knock off some of these 25 teams and they aren't even under consideration.
mac very strong this year despite the lack of respect. they've proven it on the field. and will be all over the bowl map in some good matchups.

The BCS isn't out yet. Toledo, and NIU should both be in the top 30.
UT is idol so they could creep in next weekend. I only say that because OU didn't play and moved up 3 spots last week.

I think we should all schedule more bye weeks.

RE: rankings
Something that caught my eye last night, the MAC is stacking up very well in the Sagarins within the Top 6 teams....
ELO Chess Ratings week #9
MAC (avg=48.2)
27 Toledo
41 Kent State
43 Northern Illinois
55 Ohio
57 Ball State
66 Miami
ACC (avg=52.3)
33 Florida State
34 Clemson
58 North Carolina
62 Duke
63 Miami FL
64 NC State
BE (avg=63.5)
25 Louisville
42 Rutgers
46 Cincinnati
69 Syracuse
94 Pittsburgh
105 South Florida
MW (avg=69.3)
32 Boise State
54 Fresno State
67 San Diego State
83 Air Force
85 Nevada
95 New Mexico
SBC (avg=80.2)
48 Western Kentucky
52 ULM
68 Arkansas State
91 Middle Tenn
104 Louisiana
118 Troy
CUSA (avg=81.7)
40 Tulsa
59 Central Florida
86 East Carolina
92 SMU
106 Houston
107 Marshall
WAC (avg=87)
37 San Jose State
45 Utah State
51 Louisiana Tech
103 Texas State
122 UT-San Antonio
164 Idaho
I don't know how a BCS bowl could go to 1 loss Boise State (MW) or Louisiana Tech (WAC) when the MAC is the #5 conference this season looking across the top conference teams.
A one loss MAC school would also be 12-1 vs. 11-1 if Boise and La Tech can get that far. Considering the MAC has 4 schools with on loss (Toledo, NIU, Ohio, KSU) the odds are good that at least one of them will end up 12-1 to finish the season.

I frankly wonder if Sagarin isn't setting himself up to drop out of the BCS in the near future with how wonky his ELO_CHESS ratings are. Only one of the formulas is public knowledge and the utter insanity of those rankings, especially compared to his "regular" ratings blows me away.

Toledo and NIU should have been ranked by now...
I understand Texas A&M, they honestly are the biggest shocker for me out of all the AQ conference teams that moved. I did not expect them to go into the SEC strong.

I'm not sure what the elo chess is and I love my Rockets but in what world should the 1 loss Rockets who have squeaked by an FCS team and a few of the bottom tier MAC teams be ranked 6 spots higher than a 1 loss Florida State? FSU beat Clemson by more than Toledo beat EMU, Buffalo, and I believe Coastal Carolina.

The ELO_CHESS is the BCS mandated "no margin of victory" formula. Every game goes in as 1-0. Florida State is getting murdered in the computers because of playing Savannah State, who sits down at #241 in the regular Sagarins.

There should be a margin of victory factor, but it shouldn't be that much.

MAC is having its best season in a long time as the conference is 6 deep. WMU and Miami are average, but on a given day beat anyone of the top six. BGSU and Ball State are right there too. The bottom isn't as bad as those records but the MAC has a lot more good teams and the others haven't kept up.

Why would anyone consider Miami ahead of BG?

I'm pretty sure he meant Ball State and BG are "right there" [with NIU, Toledo, Kent, Ohio]

I thought he meant Miami and WMU filled out the top six, and BG and BSU were right there too.
Anyway, I think it's a step down from the top 3 (Ohio has too many injuries to be among the elite right now), but the six bowl-eligible teams are a good set, and the best showing of the conference ever.

I disagree.
Kent State beat Rutgers, Toledo beat Cincinnati. The top of the MAC smacked the top of the Big East. Its only natural that the top of the MAC is rated ahead of the BE.
Some have said that the MAC is weaker because of the bottom teams. The ACC has 12 teams in it yet the MAC 1-6 is rated higher. I just don't think the teams at the bottom are as important as the top. It would be great to see every MAC school win every non-conference game but then that would make us like the Big 12, one of the very top conferences in the country.
Think basketball here, the A10 has a lot of crappy teams in it every year yet is able to get 3-4 in the NCAAs because of the teams at the top being really good.

RE: rankings
I was noticing that one of the "bad" teams that MAC teams get to play is Buffalo as they only have 1 win. And Buffalo did lose to Pitt and UConn, but the other teams they've played - Georgia plus probably the top 4 teams in the MAC - I think they're better than their record.

They played Pitt, Toledo and Ohio tough.
Buffalo would be bowl eligible on a CUSA schedule, IMO.

RE: rankings
I've said before that usually you can divide the MAC into thirds and judge the strength of the conference by how those thirds are weighted. This year's cut looks like this-
top 4 teams- 30-4
middle 5 teams- 22-21
bottom 4 teams- 3-30
normally I would say we are having an average to below average season based on where the bulk of the teams are located but the top has been so strong that its been one of the better ones. Will be interesting to see if the top stays strong will the bottom improve or will the middle weaken. Or do we start to see more of a divide from thirds to halves? If CMU and WMU continue to struggle this year and BSU, BGSU and Miami continue to gain it could be a split of 7 good, 6 bad.
what type of distribution of wins do you think is best for the conference?
