Copa America 2016 in US!
02-13-banana

This will be awesome. Copa America will have US, Mexico & 4 other CONCACAF nations joining for 2016 tournament. And, it will be held in the good old U-S-of-A.

That's a big deal. I wonder if there is a push to combine CONCACAF and CONMEBOL?

BTW, this isnt a done deal yet. CONCACAF hasnt signed off yet.

As far as combing CONCACAF and COMEBOL, it will never happen. You could possibly move some teams over but the Panamas and Costa Ricas and Jamiacas of the world will never go along with it because they would never qualify for the WC out of COMEBOL.

If this is successful (and it will be), then there could be a push to combine Copa America and the Gold Cup and make it the same summer as the Euros. Of course, it would need to be hosted in the US each time to achieve max profits.

CONCACAF will sign-off, just have to decide how much of a cut they want first.

For that matter, the US might have trouble with that too

That is true, but I will contend that qualifying from CONCACAF is MUCH harder than most of the world realizes it.

If they think it is a complete joke and the reality is that it is very easy, I would agree with you. We have made it for 20 years without any trouble even though we have had some teams that were not up to our own standards in that time period.

Can't count '94 since the US did not have to go through qualifying. CONCACAF is much harder than most realize. Other than the US and Mexico there are other teams that are tough to beat such as: Jamaica, Costa Rica, Honduras, Panama. Is it like qualifying in Europe no, but it is harder than those in Europe realize.

We were 20 minutes away from not qualifying in 2002. We were very lucky to get to Korea.

OK, that stops short of my suggestion, and is probably the best choice. It would add more prestige to the Copa America/Gold Cup if we combined the two permanently. I like it. And I think it could be hosted very well by Brazil, Argentina, and Mexico, in addition to the USA.

I remember that very well. Joe-Max Moore breaks down the defense, then finds Clint Mathis who buries a shot from the top of the box.

FIFA would force each confederation to have their own championship at some point in each cycle.

I don't think CONMEBOL would every sign off on this, How much pride that organization has. The embarassment if it team from CONCACAF won the combined competition is why it will not happen.

???? I dont understand that. CONCACAF teams have participated in the Copa America 15 times with 2 finals appearances. Yet they still keep inviting CONCACAF teams.

I don't think that Gold Cup and Copa America would ever combine to make it into one competition. I think both organizations would not want a 24 four team tournament, a mini World Cup. Their are too many egos in those organizations.

probably thinking of another game. We needed a win to guarantee a spot. We drew at T&T and Honduras or Guatemala lost that day. If they would have won, we wouldn't have qualified.

I was thinking of the semifinal round. From Wiki...

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2002_FIFA_W...ls#Group_3

If we had not won that last match at Barbados, we would not have advanced to the final round of CONCACAF qualification. And we didn't score until the 63rd minute.
