Jesse Jackson's post MLK assassination actions
I am currently reading "Hellhound on his Trail" by Hampton Sides. It details how Jackson lied about where he was and what he did after the assassination, going so far as to smear M.L.K's. blood on his shirt to make it look like he had been close by when King was killed. Jackson said that he cradled King's head in his lap, and King said his last words to Jesse. By all witness accounts Jackson was nowhere near King when the shot was fired, and he even hid and wasn't seen for like 20 minutes. In the immediate aftermath Jackson flew to Chicago (hired a P.R. agent) and hit the talk show circuit, still wearing the blood stained shirt.

I had always heard there were some discrepancies regarding Jackson's version of events but I had no idea about the blatant lies.

My question, how did he achieve any "leadership" position in the black community if it is verified that he will say and do anything to promote Jesse Jackson?

The same thing could be said for Rush Limbaugh, the drug-addled serial divorcer who is one of the loudest and most popular proponents of 'traditional marriage' and harsh drug enforcement.

Not too say Jackson should be, he shouldn't, and honestly any educated black person I have ever asked thinks the guy is an idiot. But he, like Limbaugh, just pander to the lowest common denominator, and their actions make for good news for the other side, which also increases their visibility a great deal. For instance, conservative whites care far more for what Jackson does than moderate blacks; people like being offended for some reason.

Good point, but Limbaugh doesn't put himself out there as a spokesperson for white people.

Smaller pools of population, and of visibility within the media, so there's less of an ability for a public figure to dispute those claims he makes. What do the owners of Fox and MSNBC have in common? They're both white.

Let's put it this way, which one makes them more money? Polite discourse, or 'CAN YOU BELIEVE XXXXXXX SAID XXXXXXX?!?!' on either side of the aisle? It's the only reason people like Jackson, Limbaugh, Coulter, (name a random extremist liberal), etc have the popularity they have. And it's not as if either side really wants to calm down the angry masses, it's those same people who lead to massive campaign donations and popular support. Also that clog up my damn facebook newsfeed. 03-hissyfit

As soon as we as a culture figure out that there is no "us and them", and that there is only "us", we might see real progress in race relations.

There is still an 'us' and 'them' but don't worry Smaug, one day we'll be able to stand on the top of a mountain, holding hands, and singing the old negro spiritual "Free at last, free at last, thank god almighty, we've got a 16 team college football playoff!"

Wow, the first response to a question is to immediately side track the issue and hammer a guy from an opposing party. Smooth move.

Anyway, if Jacksong did any of that stuff, then I hope the people who send their last $5 to him looking for some hope finally see through him. I think the country has had enough of that clown shaking down corp America.

Not at all, I'm just pointing out that it isn't unheard of and that Jackson isn't some outlier that doesn't exist elsewhere. It's not as if I used that to defend ignorant people who support him or his actions.

That doesn't just stand for race relations. It's us v. them in virtually every facet of life in America. It's most evident in the workers v. the owners.

Because we have people who profit off keeping people as enemies: Sharpton, Jackson, lawyers, Union leadership.

Ehhh excuse me for just a second, American blacks aren't monolithic in case some of you think otherwise. Blacks like other groups that God created have a wide range of aspirations, views, and interests.

I don't know any blacks who support Jesse "the camera" Jackson or Al "not so" Sharpton for the record, they are abject racists. Thanks.

Wasn't being intentionally vague, I've pointed them out prior in the thread.

Extremists on both sides exist partly because those on the other side need a lightning rod to anger their constituency/fans. Ann Coulter exists just as much because the Democrats love to hate her than because the Right loves her views.

But Coulter's job isn't dependent on conservatives viewing themselves as "victims." Jackson and Sharpton's living is dependent on their black followers being conditioned to believe themselves as "victims" needing protection from their leaders. The NAACP, La Raza, all are dependent on being viewed as advocates for "victims" of white people. And the leadership wields large amounts of influence/power/money because they exploit the victim mentality of their membership. They're just as bad as national unions.

The NAACP isn't aligned with Jackson and Sharpton, and vice versa, and conflating them to be the same shows you have a laughable understanding of this situation. Not too mention, Coulture absolutely relies on people feeling victimized, either through an attack on their rights to religious expression (which aren't under attack) or traditional marriage (again, laughable).

They're the exact same, just on different sides of the spectrum and the sooner you realize that the better you can tune both of them out.

I can't stand Coulter, but she has nothing in common with Jackson and Sharpton. Jackson and Sharpton are at their core, extortionists. Coulter does not organize boycotts, for instance, dragging your business through the news until you capitulate and give something to her. Read up on how JJ Sr and Operation Push boycotted A-B, and quietly dropped it after his son was given a lucrative Budweiser distributorship in Chicago. Show me Coulter's Tawana Brawley. Etc.
