Just got back from Texas. Showed the Mrs. LaTech and UNT. Yikes.
We did not go to Texas to see future C-USA schools, but to visit family in Dallas. On the way en route we took a moment to show her LaTech, and while close to Denton this weekend went by UNT. Her reply when we pulled up at UNT, after already having seen LaTech? "Oh, baby! Are we having to drop to Division 2?

I like the Tech football program, and like Villareal (Mean Green AD who used to be at USM). And I had been sipping Kool-Aid hyping the newbies to make myself sleep at night, but her honest opinion at simply glancing football facilities caused me to pause and exhale.

Remind me of USM's stadium capacity and attendance?

There obviously were not games going on, but if you've been to The Rock, it's legit. It's not huge, but looks division one.

Have you been to the two campuses I just mentioned and seen their stadiums? Really, have you? Pirates whine so much about travel that I doubt it, but would like to know before considering your reply further.

All you really need to know is capacity. Both are 30K. USM is 36K. Not that big of a difference. More than adequate for CUSA.

Give them time, they might be able to develop some nice programs.

Haven't been to see La Tech facilities but I don't understand her appraisal of UNT facilities.

It feels like you are pulling up to Mississippi College or Delta State.

Well, I haven't been to those schools either. I have been to other various football stadiums on college campuses, mostly D1 schools and I guess we'll have to agree to disagree.

We could have had GSU and the Georgia Dome...and we could have had their RPI drain of a program. A winning team is more important to me than facilities. Cool stadiums and arenas are great, but not if the home team sucks.

That's a shame. I thought UNT's stadium looked OK in pictures. I'm disappointed to hear that it didn't live up to expectations in person.

There's a little more too it than just capacity. Show a little more respect to USM blunderbuss, they've earned it.

Are you sure you were even looking at the right stadium in Denton?
If you were looking at the stadium East of 35, that is the old stadium. It has been years since I have been to USM, but unless you have made a lot of improvements to your stadium; I question your wife's opinnion. Heck, I question it anyway; there are not a lot of better stadiums around than Apogee. Bigger yes, better no.

Yeah, and beyond that I just don't think GA State has much of a future in athletics. They are the classic example of a commuter school whose student body is filled with wannabe fans of other (AQ) schools.

We can compare UNT and Tech to FAU, ULL, etc., and declare our choices to be superior... that's plausible at least. What I am not convinced of is that we needed to expand at all. It doesn't seem like a very USM-friendly decision.

Pretty hard to judge a empty stadium unless it houses a national power or a tradition laden program. When I grade a stadium it is based mostly on atmosphere.

On paper (and I know its hard to judge on paper too) I like the NT stadium. Not a big fan of the end zone seating but it looks like the stadium was built to easily expand and that end zone seating will likely disappear one day. I look forward to taking in a game there.

I went to Tech a couple of years ago, I won't say I was impressed but I wasn't disappointed either. AND it was far from a good day for them to put their best foot forward. Tech will improve IMO. They have waited a long time to get into CUSA and I think it will bring a new excitement to the program. That should result in a much better pregame and game enviroment, similar to what we seen in the mid to late 90's.

our stadium might not be as nice as USM but it soon will take a step up. But our campus is definitely nicer than USM. That didn't impress at all.

Isn't Apogee right across the highway from your old stadium?
