And it beats the heck out of the Sun Bowl in this sense. San Diego is sometimes referred to as America's Finest City. El Paso? It's sometimes called El Armpit.

But close for Houston and SMU fans.

Ticket City and Armed Forces are closer.

They are, but the Sun is ACC and PAC 12. Big East is going from an 8 team conference to 12 teams. Bowl games will be added.

It may not end up being ONE Bowl....as it might end up being shared by bowls on both coasts.

With the most spread out conf in the nation...it doesn't make sense say if USF or UCF won the conf to fly to SAN DIEGO if that bowl won the rights to Big East Champ...or vice versa...if SDSU won the title...it would be silly to force them to play in the champs sports bowl in Orlando.

I look for multiple bowls spread out across the country to "share" the rights to Big East Champ (if they are not ranked in the Top 4) with the most regional bowl getting the selection.

Poinsettia gets a bit of a bad rap because it is such an early bowl (and always will be because of the separation from the Holiday). I enjoyed both my trips there. It's a great locale, and pretty well run bowl. You can do worse with minor bowls.

Although the payout to the participating teams isn't nearly as much as with the Sun Bowl and in fairness to El Paso, although I've never attended the game, I hear the city does a great job as host.

I can't imagine the folks in El Paso being fired up about inviting a Big East team. Especially one of the former CUSA teams.

RE: Big East Interested In Poinsettia Bowl
Poinsettia makes sense location-wise and is reasonably attainable for the Big East. The question, as others have asked, is who the Big East would be playing.

The more interesting part is the list of other western bowls that the Big East is looking at in addition to the Poinsettia: Hawaii, Las Vegas, Armed Forces and Liberty.

Thats a pretty unimpressive list of bowls....I'd rather us make a nice run at the Ticket City Bowl for teh Texas option. Out west, we are more limited. It is what it is I guess.

I think there is a tendency of fans to overthink minor bowls. They are what they are (a reward for the players and a chance for a couple extra weeks of practice) and no one remembers who played where a year later. Whatever hierarchy fans have in their mind of one bowl to the next is pretty irrelevant in the big picture. You can pretty much interchange one for another and it really doesn't matter, IMO.

The Holiday Bowl has had a deal with the Pac and the B12 for years and it works out well for them. In other words, unless the B12 was to bail for some reason, no way.

Poinsettia is a decent get for a minor bowl.

Now I think the next best one would be the TicketCity Bowl. It's on New Years Day at the Cotton Bowl Stadium, maybe NBC or NBCSN could show it.

That should be a lock for the Big East. I really enjoyed watching Houston hammer Penn St.

Wrong, the Sun Bowl was excited to get USF. They even tried to get USF back a couple years ago when they couldn't fill one of their slots. USF brough a very good crowd to El Paso (a lot more than Oregon did).

By the way the holiday gets the #5 or 6 Big 12 team. If the BE could get BYU and offer them our #3, with SDSU, Boise, Navy, and BYU to choose from, that might be possible. The BE needs a solid bowl for the western side.

Holiday gets Big 12 #5. Realistically, I wouldn't bank on taking any tie-in away from the SEC, Big Ten or Big 12 unless those conferences actually choose to leave those bowls. The bowls themselves wouldn't willingly drop those conferences for bowl purposes unless they're swapping amongst themselves (e.g. Big Ten takes the Holiday, Big 12 takes the Gator, etc.).

OK, offer them the # 2 with Boise, SDSU, Navy and BYU to choose from every year. That beats their #5 pick, who normally will not be from amont the following: OU, TX, OSU, et al. BTW it may become their #6 if they put a team in Champions bowl.

If your school has thousands and thousands of fans visit their city for 3-4 days...fill up thousands of hotel rooms...spend tons of cash in their city's restaurants and bars...they don't care what school it is or from what conf...everyone accepts CA$H!

Get BYU and get the Vegas bowl to go with Poinsettia. That would give us 2 western bowls, one in a premier travel destination. Then add one of Armed Forces, Ticket City or Houston Bowl to go with Champs, Liberty, Charlotte, Pinstripe and St. Pete. Probably have to hold onto Birmingham for a 9th bowl in a 14 team league.

Not trying to start petty disagreements, but El Paso is 737 miles from Houston...I have made that drive a few times and it is nearly 12 hours of torture. Dallas, New Orleans, Memphis, Birmingham, etc are all closer. Florida is 3 hours closer to Houston than El Paso. COGS
