This from App State message board
Quote:Sorry I haven’t posted in a few days, but my source is now feeling less than good about about the situation for App.

It appears as though ODU will join CUSA after June 1st. The decision was made on Monday, and will be annouced in June formally.

This means that MTSU will stay put and leave one less space in the Sun Belt.

My source now believes that while there was some interest in the Sun Belt, the opportunity may have flown by and the conference may be looking into the state of Virginia (Liberty/JMU).

I hope he is right, regardless of which school they choose it appears "his source" believes the sun belt will expand their footprint. Should be interesting to see it play out..

That doesn't make sense if it's about reducing travel costs.

App St is by far and away the best choice for the conference. GSU is good too but seem to be a year or two from being truely ready. JMU has an amazing stadium and support but are further north. For the same amount of support and a better team you can add App and they are much closer.

Liberty has good support but again is out of a footprint and further down on the list.

App St is a no brainier and should have been added yesterday. I know theres the championship game that it seems some don't want but it and stability in numbers.

It's too bad UALR doesn't play football. It really creates a tendency to have another non-football school. While I like the idea of UTA for travel, I don't like it because there are better football options. This is the Sun Belts chance to add a very good program. I'd rather the conference be proactive then reactive.

You know I thought that too, with SunBelt and MAC really, why not be proactive and put yourselves in better positions should further raiding come and I would think you would want a CG right?

Well isn't the App poster wrong about ODU announcing in June? May not want to put too much faith into that one.

The pros to a CG are that it adds an interesting game that will get better tv ratings. It can also boost a school if they get an additional win at the end of the season.

The con is the opposite. If the best team loses it screws the whole conference. Classic example is Houston last year. They were on their way to a BCS bowl game until the lost te CUSA CG. That loss screws the whole conference because they miss out on their share of the BCS bowl money.

You are right! Plus how many of us have "sources" that are nothing more than online speculation..

Last time I checked, the state of North Carolina (App St) would expand the Sun Belt's footprint. Highly doubt that Liberty gets an FBS spot anywhere at this time. They would need more movement at the BCS levels before spots open up. James Madison is going to get a MAC spot over them if the MAC expands.

I read a lot of boards, think that was about the MAC looking at a Virginia school under "What is best for the MAC..."

"App State athletic director Charlie Cobb said he’s had conversations with the Sun Belt, and discussions about starting a new FBS league."

Shows that blogger a few days ago is, again, an idiot.

I saw that too, I also saw the AD at ODU said he is hearing the WAC creating a west coast/East coast division is picking up steam as well. I wonder how accurate any of that is.

Quote:The ODU AD said yesterday on the air that there are still a lot of things being discussed. The WAC (NM St and Idaho) is talking to the FCS powers on both sides of the country to form an FBS league with east and west divisions.

I dont know if the WAC can give invites to FCS schools anymore.

But a two division Conference with Montana, Montana St, Idaho, NMSU, NAU, a California FCS like Cal Poly or UC Something out west, and JMU, App, Liberty, GoSo, Jax St. Youngstown in the east or something to that effect would be far fetched, but do-able.

It might be our only chance!

This is where I believe the steam is. It's what I call a coopted WAC. 2 current WAC teams combined with a bunch of FCS move-ups as listed above. I think this looks like the most doable option and may even be the hold up with the MAC and SBC making up their mind as FCS teams look into this.

I wonder what the rules are on that as well.

It would be kind of....... weird to see NMSU and Idaho uplift 8 FCS schools.
But would it even be legal by the NCAA rules?

My source which is a real live person in the administration has been proven time and again correct. Everything from GaSouthern's conference calls with our AD and now the calls with the SBC.

To add something to this thread he has not heard anything about Liberty being a factor in talks except in Liberty's own circles. He also said that forming a new conference is pretty far down the list in courses of action.
