You really think he is going to be completely honest with you? This is a cat and mouse game that is played through the media.
He knows that the CUSA could come in and take Ga State and MTSU any time they want, so he has to be prepared for that to happen. Losing them and going back to 8 creates instability. With Georgia Southern and App State you likely get more stability and solid teams. After seeing who the CUSA has added, I would think Ga State is wondering did we commit too quickly to the SB and could have been in the CUSA. If the SunBelt can lock down the state of Georgia with Ga State and Ga Southern then that would be a huge coup on the CUSA as GA is the #3 talent producing state in the country. Benson needs to hurry and get to 12 then lock things down with an exit fee.
I think, no disrespect intended, you're grasping at straws.
He absolutely said, when hired, the plan was to go to 12 for football.
He absolutely said, today, he's backing off of that.
I think he was honest with me.
He is going to keep all of his options open and not paint himself into a corner. That us a guarantee. So much is changing every day that no one knows exactly what will happen.
Saying he is definitely going to 12 is painting himself into a corner.

Any chance of a WAC/Sun Belt Merger? Would that bring extra bowl games? More money? Would WAC be more open to the Sun Belt than Conference USA?

No talk of that at all . . the SBC Presidents/Chancellors and the Commish all define the SBC geographical footprint as Texas to Florida. The WAC is dead as an FBS football conference.

There are pretty much 2 teams left in the WAC - Idaho and NMSU. It wouldn't be a merger, it'd be them joining the SBC. And I think I speak for the majority here when I say "Heck no." That wouldn't happen, more than likely, and the folks here might revolt.

The SBC needs to establish an official Exit Fee as soon as the membership of the conference is established. $1M sounds good to me.

Think Arkstfan posted that he felt they might stop at 10/12.

By saying they might stop after UTA, he might be trying to force Appalachian State to come on board with GSU, rather than waiting on the MAC.

If app state and ga southern express and interest to join and we do not take them, we will be making a grave error moving forward.

Georgia is not #3. California, Texas and Florida annually produce more FBS signees. Georgia is usually #4 or #5, jockeying for position with Ohio. Georgia has a great per capita rate of population to FBS signees. I think it is second behind Mississippi.

I fail to see how Liberty would be a fit, even before trying to deal with their discriminatory policies. I seriously doubt that there's any SBC support for such a move.

Yes, GA is 4th not far behind California. But when you consider how much smaller in georgraphic size the state of GA is and how much better the ratio of signees to players then GA is probably even with CA. Much easier to recruit and find the talent in GA. Also, California has 9 FBS team and Ohio has 8. GA only has 3 with hopefully a 4th soon.

App. St. is not going to the MAC. That is absurd. Some dude on a message board with a theory is not news.
I am sure no interviewee has ever been less than completely forthright with a reporter.
We will go to 12. He just doesn't want loads of emails and questions bout it for the next few weeks before it is announced.

I think Benson is making it worse for himself by saying different things and backing off.
Of course half of that is probably smokescreen.

So if we stand at 10 for now whats the mistake? It's not like anyone else is going to pick them up. CUSA would have already done that if they wanted them.

Ga Southern head football coach said there have been discussions with MAC, CUSA, and SB.
Things are happening crazy fast and decisions are being made quickly. If Ga Southern and App feel that the FBS door is closing then they could take an invite to the MAC. The Sun Belt should do all they can to keep the MAC out of the 3rd best talent producing state in the nation.
Also, does the Sun Belt want to go through more instability later if they are raided again and drop to 7 or 8? Instability could cause WKU to go to the MAC. At least with 12 you can afford to lose a couple. If Ga Southern and App are gone then who does the Sun Belt turn to? Jax State and Liberty?
Ga Southern and App State are perfect fits in the Sun Belt now. May as well lock them down and not leave it out there to chance.
