Josh Pastner, Ben Howland, and UCLA
There are a handful of jobs at the apex of the college coaching totem pole. UCLA is one of them. A likely scenario resulting from UCLA's struggles, outlined in this SI article, is that Ben Howland will soon be shown the door in Westwood.

How much does Josh covet the UCLA job? He told Gary Parrish on air yesterday that he will be in Memphis as long as he can, but what does that really mean? As with Calipari and the KY job, the UCLA job is one of the most revered coaching positions in the game. Josh is an incredible recruiter, and improving as an overall coach. He is in the dawn of what is on track to become an accomplished career. Hearing his name mentioned in connection with a possible coaching vacancy shouldn't surprise anyone here. However, UCLA isn't just your run of the mill coaching vacancy.

I doubt he goes, but lets not worry. It would be win/win either way. One, we either keep Pastner or two, we are in better position now than when we hired Pastner and we will get another quality coach. The only negative, of course, is the next coach will be bitched about as much as this one is.

Why would UCLA want an unproven coach?

They are going to swing for the fences on a big name hire like UK and UNC.

Agreed, we are in a much better position than we were when Calipari left. It just seems to me that if UCLA comes knocking you answer the door.

We're in a better position now than we ever have been in for a coaching-carousel season. I think the Big East affiliation makes it a lot harder to poach our coach, when that was already a pretty difficult task with the boosters' $$$.

Why would one of the nations blueblood programs want someone who is in over his head at UM, and can't coach? Why would they replace a coach who can't control his players want to hire a coach who let 5* WB get in his face and have numerous back & forth w/JJ?

Nice try OP. It only took you 2 posts.

Why would anyone be knocking? Josh clearly doesn't have the respect of his team. His bench/game decisions are lacking. He's just a young coach that relies on gimmicks to motivate. He hasn't beaten a worthy opponent in nearly 3 seasons. No NCAA tournament wins. So far he's only managed to SHARE the regular season CUSA Title.

RE: Josh Pastner, Ben Howland, and UCLA
Josh is currently recruiting UCLA type players. Jordan Adams, Tony Parker, Shaq Goodwin, etc. The list goes on and on. Also, Josh is the polar opposite of Ben Howland in terms of personality. Josh picked up the pieces after Calipari left and had a respectable NIT showing, won the C-USA tourney and lost a nail biter against Arizona last year, and this year will take home the C-USA regular season trophy at the very least. A timeline of steady improvement for someone who is learning on the job.
