Now, with Memphis on board and UL likely leaving, I think the anti-Temple faction have mostly been silenced and they will override Nova on it.
I believe Nova needs 2 or 3 schools to vote with them to keep out Temple. They probably have a lot of cache with those BB only teams as they have made a ton of money off of Nova's NCAA success. I think Memphis and others are irrelevant at this point, I don't believe they have a vote until they are fully in the conference. WVU may have been a supporter but I think they lost their vote too.
That being said, it seems like there is way too much speculation going on by different sources for this not to be happening. When these rumors came around last fall it seemed to be based upon 1 or 2 comments that were recycled.
Nova was in a much better position when football wasn't driving the bus so strong. They might have to eat this one. There is no doubt Temple is going, it's just when. Hopefully sooner than later and they drop a big check off when they exit.
In time the original non playing basketball schools will move along w/Notre Dame and form a basketball conferance when the BCS takes away the football conferences bowl standing. Notre Dame then can stay indy in football and have place to play bball.

Many MAC schools are already getting home games with Big East schools. NIU might be the only one that would benefit. I'd rather see $10-15 million come in.

What should the MAC do with 5M or 10M?
I don't know what the MAC's financials are so that is hard to say. Though I think it would be nice if each remaining University got some sort of share of that money.

I would like to see them take the $10MM and use it to enhance the MAC Digital Network by building studios at each campus and nice HD production equipment. Each school partner with the student marketing and communications academic programs like Ball State Sportslink. That would be great. Otherwise I think it will be spent less effectively on who knows what else. This money needs to. Be spent to enhance the profile of the conference. The other alternative is to further partner with STO to build a channel to compliment the Digital Channel with a cable channel like "The Mtn" similar to the Mountain West's channel on Direct TV. Then we would have high-quality production of the conference across both traditional and new streaming media.
No compromise on scheduling agreements, we already have 3 MAC home games vs the Big East this year. We don't have a problem scheduling them.

Max we already get those..
Buffalo is in the middle of a 2-2 with both Pitt and UConn why sell out for what we can already get?

I reallly can't see us getting $10MM outta Temple leaving in football only. Maybe we can "double our fun" from $2.5MM to $5MM.

I think our AD is against scheduling East cost teams.
But a low level FBS (Idaho) or FCS (Cal Poly) team that is West of the Rockies...why not. Though they did beat us so I guess he just wanted this series as revenge?

Wow,
This may be one of the best ideas, I have heard on this bbs. They should invest the money into the digital network for each school so we can expand the brand. This will give us a chance to grow into other market and build our market. We could build great partnerships with providers to broadcast the brand (globally) which will allow for advisement and maybe start our own network.. This will make us more marketable to teams wanting to join the conference and wanting to play us for TV exposures..
I may be off on some things but, I think the money should be invested in long term ideas..

The MAC can take advantage of a huge paradigm shift going on in media. People now watch Netflix on their video game counsels and buy 50$ devices like the "roku" to stream video and music to their home tv.
Not only could you 'partner' with providers but you could sell right to the fans. Imagine a netflix type application which will stream live games or let you watch replays?
I've missed just one UB Basketball game this year, I'll miss the ones not shown on the MAC site because I am not paying 100$ a month for cable when all I would use is ESPN / History.
But I would drop 10 a month to the MAC for such a service.
Let ESPN keep their first tier rights and gain from that exposure while putting the rest of the games on a MAC network which can be seen on your TV.

People are dreaming if you think Temple is going to pay 10 million for exit fees. If anything it will probably max out at around 5 or 6 million. It might even be less if there is a trade for some football and basketball games.

A trade for some football and basketball games to keep the exit fee lower wouldn't surprise me seeing that we are talking about the MAC, but it would be a major mistake. The MAC needs to take as much money as possible and forget about football and basketball games with Temple or the Big East.
But I haven't had a lot of faith in the MAC for quite some time so I can see them getting shafted on the deal while they're thinking they made out.
That said, there sure is a lot of talk on here about this when nothing is even set in stone yet.

I totally agree. ESPN is great exposure with 100 million households getting this channel and The MAC Digital Network has great potential. But we need both. Think of it as any other website. Anybody can have a streaming platform but the fans need to know it exists, have easy access, and be interested. This is where ESPN comes in. ESPN creates the exposure and interest nationwide to our product and then that interest can direct fans to the MAC Network. With each broadcast on ESPN you notice has a free commercial for the MAC and the individual schools thrown in as part of the deal. We use that commercial to advertise the Digital Network. Once they get there the first time, then they will have it, but we need ESPN or nobody knows it exists. Besides, ESPN creates the 'buzz' and interest for the whole NCAA football and basketball scene with their sportscenter and conference analysis, etc. Thats why I like our ESPN deal over a CBSSports type deal. Even though CBSSports is a national network, it has less than half the households covered as an additional sports pack is required. It is also a channel in the high digits that is harder to find and less well known.
The MAC Digital Network has great potential and I think will have its own channel on Google TV soon as the SEC Digital Network just got theirs and we have mirrored everything they have gotten as the MAC and SEC both have signed on with XOS Digital. Other SmartTV providers will be right behind. I use the MAC iPad app and "airplay" to wirelessly connect to my AppleTV box on my bigscreen HD TV. The quality and production is handled by the individual schools it seems and needs to improve and standardize.
This last part is where I think the Temple money should be used. Improve the quality of the end-product at the schools. Mini-studios for pre and post-game analysis (shouldnt cost much). Partnering with the marketing and communications academic programs of the schools (provides internships and is a win-win for students, fans, athletes and saves money) Check out Ball State SportsLink. Then buy nice HD equipment and set up the stadiums and bball arenas with good camera angles etc. Any money left-over is to build a partnership with STO regional TV in Cleveland where the MAC offices are HQ'd and build a regional "Mtn" type that ESPN will let us do. Will provide more quality highlights for ESPN anyways.
If we just send the money with no specifics attached to the schools in the MAC I think it will be squandered on various projects that won't help as much. This is a nice chunk of money that is hard to come by and needs to be used to launch something BIG to shape the MAC's future.

If the Big East is getting $20 mil from WWU, that number should be the starting value for negotiations to let Temple leave early. Emphasis on starting.

I hear ya, Okie, but we ain't a BCS conference, so good luck with that! (I'd be pretty happy if we could "double up" on the $2.5MM and pick up $5MM).

After being around the MAC for 20 years, here is how I think the buyout will go:
Temple: "We'll give you the $2.5 million that we agreed to, but we want to leave now."
MAC: "You have been nice to us, just go ahead and go, don't worry about the money."

Any monies retrieved should go to the football programs though. Temple was here for football only. Its sucks that the MAC footballers go into hostile places for paychecks to help fund the program, knowing the odds of success are limited. And although there have been successes they are the sport w/the sacrafice.
I hope the money goes to them and not the basketball or other programs, who had no sacrafices.
Agree.
I could see 250K going to each school.
E.g., I could see the windfall used to increase asst coaches salaries over a 2-year period.
Take 125K each year and increase salaries for the non-coordinators by say 15 - 20K/year for two years.

Say what?
After the MAC negotiates a really nice buyout clause, does one really expect them to give it away?????
The MAC office has gotten much better than in the early 90s, e.g.,.
