Temple Exit SOON.
http://www.philly.com/philly/sports/coll..._East.html

"Temple gets an invitation to play football in the Big East, the expectation is that the Owls will find a way to leave the Mid-American Conference before the start of the football season, according to league sources.

"If West Virginia can figure out a way to get out of the Big East, what makes you think Temple can't get out of the MAC?" a source said Thursday.

Discussions between the Big East and Temple regarding the Owls' joining the conference are hitting the final stages.

The MAC has a $2.5 million fee for an exit with two years' notice. So Temple would have to negotiate for an immediate exit similar to West Virginia's from the Big East.

The conference agreed to accept nearly $20 million from West Virginia so the school can join the Big 12 as a full member in July.

According to a source, as of Thursday afternoon the Big East had not called for a membership vote on Temple.

How much would the MAC make the Owls pay to speed up their exit?

A source said it doesn't matter.
The Big East, I assume, will help them out," the source said. "They got $20 million from West Virginia's exit fee. The Big East needs Temple."

And it may need the Owls for football more than anything else. With West Virginia's departure, the Big East has only seven football teams in 2012. That's why it's important for the conference to add a football member as soon as possible.

If Temple does go for all sports, it could be next season, 2013, or 2014."

Hope the MAC gets at least 5-8 Million in this exit and doesn't negotiate for games w/Big East teams.

Temple should have to pay the max for saving their program.

I wouldn't mind negotiating for some Big East home games, just because I'm sick of NIU playing Idaho.

Many MAC schools are already getting home games with Big East schools. NIU might be the only one that would benefit. I'd rather see $10-15 million come in.

Brian:

What should the MAC do with 5M or 10M?

A Big East opponent on the schedule doesn't add much at the end of the day.

A perfect OOC schedule would be

1-Big Ten
1- Military Academy or CUSA
1- Sun Belt or WAC
1-1AA

Yeah, $5MM seems about right with no prior notice being given. As has been pointed out, although that's not a lot of dough when split among all the conference members, but it's a nice "chunk of change" if the conference can just keep it in the bank and use it to help future MAC bowl teams with expenses and minimum ticket purchases, etc. it'd be a good deal.

Did you read the part of this article where it says their has been no vote to let them in. I have not read any where that Villanova hast changed their stance. This "source" is also "assuming" that the Big East will help pay a huge exit fee. Boise "assumed" the same thing. This article is just another version of all the rest.

Season starts in 5 months and conference schedules are set, $10MM minimum and that's not including the A-10. Why do MAC fans have such low expectations? Big East has the problem, not the MAC. Its not on us to accomodate them.

Nova doesn't have veto power all by themselves, do they? I thought it was posted that they need a certain high percentage, and in the last vote on Temple a number of other BE schools joined Nova to block Temple. Now, with Memphis on board and UL likely leaving, I think the anti-Temple faction have mostly been silenced and they will override Nova on it.

I think $10mil is a good starting point.

It seems from this that they will keep their basketball agreements for the next 2 seasons so that wont cost them anything extra.

I have not seen that anywhere, but I do think that Boise and San Diego want more west teams and don't want more east teams. Rumors are that they are having second thoughts now. Big East can't lose them or they are taking 2 steps backwards. I think there is still quite the divide on both camps concerning Temple within the Big East and they haven't voted yet to extend invitation. Sounds to me that they have only approached them to find out what the cost and headache involved would be if they did invite them. MAC and A-10 could push back to the point where they finally just decide to pay Boise what they need to make them come early. Boise said they would come if the Big East help out with costs and could be the cheaper solution and avoid more differences in opinion between the Villanova camp and pro-temple camp.

Just saying its not a sure thing.

I don't know what the MAC's financials are so that is hard to say. Though I think it would be nice if each remaining University got some sort of share of that money.

I've assumed the MAC has used BCS monies to fund ticket purchase guarantees for bowl bids.

I assume they would use some of these monies for that purpose.

I wouldn't mind seeing each MAC member get a check for say 250K.

I believe Nova needs 2 or 3 schools to vote with them to keep out Temple. They probably have a lot of cache with those BB only teams as they have made a ton of money off of Nova's NCAA success. I think Memphis and others are irrelevant at this point, I don't believe they have a vote until they are fully in the conference. WVU may have been a supporter but I think they lost their vote too.

That being said, it seems like there is way too much speculation going on by different sources for this not to be happening. When these rumors came around last fall it seemed to be based upon 1 or 2 comments that were recycled.

Any monies retrieved should go to the football programs though. Temple was here for football only. Its sucks that the MAC footballers go into hostile places for paychecks to help fund the program, knowing the odds of success are limited. And although there have been successes they are the sport w/the sacrafice.

I hope the money goes to them and not the basketball or other programs, who had no sacrafices.
