No, it isn't. It has consistently been that way for quite some time, republicans slash taxes and benefits in their own states and force their citizens to rely on the federal government for aid, then jump on the bandwagon crying for smaller government.

Wow...you're such a dbag. Maybe its because that's where the poor people live. A-Hole.
And yes, I'm still all for weaning them off and making them EARN a living.

I think we can all agree that this derived conclusion was the entire reason New York Times created and printed the map, btw. It's in the subtlety.
Besides that, the whole Red State / Blue State paintbrush is a different ball of wax compared to drilling down to county- and city-level voting. To assume Holmes County, MS, is brimming with GOP-ers because Mississippi as a whole is regarded as a conservative state is erroneous, to say the least.

It is odd that major cities like, oh, New York and Washington were left off the map...

Would you like to compare the local politics and stop using generalities like the entire states? I mean, if you don't want to sound like a disingenuous ahole, that is.

For Alabama and Mississippi, if you look at only income support, the vast majority of areas that have higher dependence on gov't benefits are mostly black and vote Democratic. You two should stop being so racist.

RE: The Geography of Government Benefits
When interpreting the map, it's good to understand that for a good number of people, platform issues aren't all created equal. Some poorer folks in Appalachia may place greater emphasis on social conservative topics and give those much higher priority than fiscal topics.
Take some of your auto-union factory workers in suburban Detroit. They'll vote hard-core Democrat because of labor issues. But they won't be so "liberal" if their daughter dates a black man or if an openly gay couple moves in next door.
Not everything fits perfectly in the left-right dichotomy.

Just looking at Mississippi, the bluest counties in the state are receiving the most IN the state.

So true. I mean, there is a difference between the southern plantation owners and the cities full of those "colored" people.

If you click through the timeline, you can see the dependency getting worse and worse over time, particularly in the South.

I was unaware Sunflower, Bolivar, Sharkey, Humphreys, and Holmes counties were considered "cities". Perhaps you more about the state I lived in for 18 years than I do. Please, by all means, elaborate.
BTW retards, their congressman is Bennie Thompson. Gee, wonder what party affiliation he holds?

The Southern states are also getting bluer and bluer. ...or don't you remember your fellow retarded Dim like UMGrad saying as much in the past? Government dependence = Democrat voters = governmental slaves.

If anything, I was thinking that it's not a strict left/right issue and more speaks to shifting economics and demographics.
But feel free to digest the data in the way that makes you most comfortable.

There's nothing to digest. It's broken down at the link.
All Government Benefits
Social Security
Medicare
Medicaid
Income Support
Veterans Benefits
Unemployment Insurance
Some of those aren't problematic, other than SS which needs to be revamped, because that money or those benefits were promised as a part of a contract. Those being SS, Medicare, Unemployment, and Veterans Benefits.

Except for the gulf coast counties, it looks like most of MS is receiving a lot of benefits. Not just a couple of counties. Appalachia and upstate Maine and Michigan are also fairly rural.

NYC and DC are on there as far as color coding. While both of these cities have a lot of poor, they also have a large upper middle and wealthy class. So if using percentage of total income this is probably correct. If it was somehow percent of people depending on these incomes it would probably be a different percentage.
