Anyone ever been there? Nice people and did good work for me last week....will never go back. Prices on work insulted me.

RE: Christian Brothers Automotive
Went to the one on Houston Levee near 64 for an oil change and tire rotation. They put the oil filter on cross threaded or something and I was leaking oil every time I parked. Took it to Whitworth, it took them a while (had to let it run and park it for the leak to happen), but they fixed it.

Am now a happy Whitworth customer, they fixed my wife's car as well.

RE: Christian Brothers Automotive
I asked for a quote on getting my timing belt replaced. Mind you I already have one from Honda Haven, Wolfchase Honda, and another Honda specific type shop. The most expensive of these quotes has been $750. This is for any fluids, timing belt, drive belts, and water pump. CB wants almost $1,200.00 for that job. Insane! I've priced all the parts and if I get the most expensive (I say that rather than "the best" because sometimes it isn't the case) parts then it would be roughly $350 for parts. They quoted $580 on parts and $490 on labor. Tax and other fee's brought the quote up to nearly $1,200.00.

Absolutely agree! Whitworth is great. Rick is one of the nicest guys I've ever met, we've used them for years.

Several years ago I took my car in for transmission problems. They charged me $300 and then told me that they didn't work on transmissions.

Christian Brothers is pretty high and they don't have a dedicated shuttle to get you to work you just have to ride with dude. Their parts prices are normal but their labor is pretty high. You might as well take it to the dealer for what they charge and at least the dealer has a shuttle and are open on Saturdays.

Harris Quon on Elmore and Raleigh-LaGrange. Specializes in Japanese made cars. Good work and good prices.

RE: Christian Brothers Automotive
I took my car to Gateway Tire to get a timing belt estimate. The guy said, just off the top of his head, it would be roughly $1000. Come to find out, my car never needs its timing belt/chain, whatever it is, changed. Now, I'm not saying Gateway tried to pull a fast one on me, but it's easy to get taken advantage of. As I am sure you guys know, many newer cars don't need this work done.

In fact, I have had great experience with Gateway for many years. So, take it for what it's worth. It pays to read your car's online board, like MT.org, and have a brother you can consult.

Christian Brothers on Summer in Bartlett does have a shuttle. I have had the owner himself give me a ride home. I have always had good service from them. They are all franchised I believe, so you cant compare one to the others.

Harris Quon does do excellent work. Very reputable.

Massey Imports on Elmore is as honest and reputable as you can get on imports. Lots of fellas from the Acura dealership work there.

American car choice is Broadus Automotive on Cherry. That guy is the most complete mechanic I have ever met. From Caddy to performance, he can do it all.

Two things that I've found separate those guys and Jackson Ave Tire (formerly Jackson Ave Firestone) from many of the others:

If you have a problem that they aren't sure of or aren't sure that they can handle, they tell you up front that you'd be better off some place else.

No auto repair business is perfect and if there is an issue, they make it right without controversy.

Charging $350 for a job that used $50 of parts and took 30 minutes of labor is outright theft. I make sure I always have my tools with me now.

For what I had done, simple oil change, their price was not too bad, but costing me another $200 to get it fixed when they can't put an oil filter on right, and taking 8 hours to do an oil change soured me on them.

On a related note, my wife's suburban needs new tires. Has anyone used Costco? Any other recommendations?

Just don't use them and it isn't theft. That is ridiculous to say. Look, they were nice enough people but unless it is a deal I am not going to use them. I shop around for the best prices as well as quality.
