Student Turnout
We are having some debate on our fan board about where our students are and it has come to my attention that less than 5% of our overall enrollment comes to our big events like football and men's basketball.

I was curious as to what the student turnout is at other MAC schools.. Can you guys give me some overview?

RE: Student Turnout
Akron has a surprisingly decent student turnout. Problem is that 99% of them leave by halftime.

Part of the reason is that we implemented a rewards program for students. Your student ID gets scanned and you accumulate points over the course of the year. When you hit a certain number of points you get a prize, like a hoodie or a backpack. Top points earners get some really nice stuff like airline tickets and expensive Best Buy giftcards. The program is very successful.

That gets them to show up, but then the less-interested students leave after because they got their points and that's the only reason they came. They certainly didn't show up to watch such a terrible football team.

Toledo normally gets about 40% turnout of total students for football games.

I've always heard Toledo's student attendance has been pretty good for many of their teams.

Considering the entire East side of our stadium is made up of predominately NIU students, i'd say NIU averages around 8-10k students a game for football. For basketball, maybe 100-200 students tops.

So NIU students are 50-60% of attendance for FB.

The 8-10k is not even close for an average. We will get above 8k students at a game 2-3 times a year. The Cal Poly and Kent St game I would be surprised if there were 3,000 students in the stands. Unless our game against EMU is moved to Wednesday due to the NBA lockout then I doubt more than 2k students will be there. Maybe a few hundred more would show up if we need to win that game to go to the MACC.

Here are real 2010 averages of student attendance in football for MAC teams.
NIU 4106
Temple 3500
Kent St 3457
Ball St 2559
BGSU 2332* (2009 stat)
Buffalo 1939
Akron 1846
EMU 1828

Data related to student attendance was not available for Central Michigan, Miami(OH), Ohio, Toledo, and Western Michigan.

http://www.niu.edu/vision2020/groups/Stu...ort_v9.pdf

For basketball in 2010 NIU averaged 230 per game. See pg 5 for other schools.

Pretty much. The community does not support NIU much.

I think our average attendance right now is 16-17k. Without student attendance it would probably be around 8-10k.

I think he's actually right. They get a good turnout of students and die-hard fans that have been there for a long time. Where they lack is getting the average Philadephian (is that even a word?) to come out and support the team.

I am right, because it comes from our athletic department and coach. PSU was 12K. Nova was between 10K-11K. Toledo was like 7,500. Buffalo was like 9K-10K.

Dunno about this year, but many times we've (Miami) had upwards of 6-8K of our students attend...pretty good for an enrollment of 16K.

+1

Average student attendance at Huskie Stadium is nowhere near 8-10K. And that's true even using second quarter student attendance. A large number of our students don't come into HS until the second quarter and leave for good at halftime.

RE: Student Turnout
Toledo has good student sections for womens basketball games, and football. Support could and should be bigger than what we have tho.

For cartain games like EMU, our normal crowd was very good and the students came out in half support. They show up and it's a sell out.

UNH was the first game of the year, so that was a good student section.
Boise State was ranked #4, so if the bronco's were just having practice the student section would have filled up.
EMU was a day game in the middle of season, still okay but not good enough.
Miami was homecoming and I was happy with the turnout.
NIU is a huge MAC game and will have good support.
WMU is a fairly large game depending on what happens vs. NIU. But it's senior night, and if we're undefeated in the MAC then that student section will also be full for that game.

I'm thinking 5 of 6 games filling up a 6-8k student section is pretty good.

I love you MAC fans who know nothing about Penn State and Temple, and just assume because PSU is in the B10 all of Happy Valley was at the Linc. I doubt they had more than 1K PSU students there.
