RE: Sun Belt Expansion: Who and When?
Question: What is the Sun Belt's biggest problem?
Answer: Perception nationally that the conference is horrible on the field and consensus worst conference in FBS
Question: What would help the conference improve on this?
Answer: Add teams that have proven historically they can win and have a strong tradition that have a good shot at winning on the field. This will improve the Belt's reputation on the field and thus help all of the conference's teams in recruiting etc and shed the "worst conference in FBS" tag.
Question: Who fits the bill?
Answer: Georgia Southern and App State have historically across multiple decades in difference eras put teams on the field that win and go toe to toe with big name schools. Georgia Southern and App State have an unmatched tradition with 9 national titles and 11 title game appearances between them (6 GSU and 3 App State). The state of GA has the best ratio of FBS signees for the # of FBS schools so Ga Southern would rack up the talent immediately. As an FCS this past year they signed more three star's than any current Belt team.
Question: But they aren't in a top 10 media market, why pick them?
Answer: The Sun Belt needs winners on the field at this point to improve their image which will help all of the schools recruit better players. The large market's in the Sun Belt now have done nothing to improve the product on the field. With Ga Southern you get the Alabama of FCS and App is the hot program equivalent to FLA over the past 6 years.

Instead of adding teams, we need to strengthen the ones we already have. I'd rather walk into battle with 1,000 really strong soldiers as opposed to 1,100 moderately strong soldiers. I like to roll with a small group of hard pipe hittin' ballers when I ride into a gang fight, as opposed to a medium sized group of wall street executives, but that's just me. Quantity does not in itself imply quality.

(05-09-2011 12:37 PM)CAJUNNATION Wrote: In a best case scenario, your expansion candidates would provide benefit to your conference immediately and offer potential for further growth and vitality of your conference.
In the case of the SBC, the only fair thing to do is expand westward to create a western division.
Given these criteria, at least 2 schools should be added, today, to the SBC.
Texas State
UTSA
Both are going FBS.
Within a 60 mile radius of the 2 schools are over 3 million people.
Brings the Alamo Dome into the SBC almost assuring the league of a future bowl game in that vacation destination.
Adding these 2 schools would kill WAC football offerring untold financial benefits to the SBC through greater share of the BCS pie and expanded coverage of the SBC on ESPN networks.
I wonder if TSSM or UTSA advocates for expansion, have ever looked at the history of those schools. Both are large and have money via student fees but neither is a sure thing to be more than another also ran at the bottom of the NCAA football world. There is a lot of excitement and hyperbole coming out of that area but how long will that last once they start taking the mandatory beatings.
The San Antonio and Austin areas are not recruiting hot beats and the almighty UT rules there even more than the rest of Texas. One has basically been a middle of the pack Southland football team and the other has not yet played a game. They also have a decided disadvantage in both are in the same geographical area. Both schools have potential (doesn't everyone?) but I would prefer to see how they grow over a few year before blindly offering them anything.
I would project that both could become average Belt teams if not better, but why not make them and anyone else earn conference membership. At least Appalachian State and Ga.Southern have been stellar FC programs, while the same can't be said of the Texas Twins.
As far as killing the Wac. Why, they have seemed more than capable. I also highly doubt that UTSA would have much sway over the Alamo Dome. IMO, the Belt should set tight until they lost a team or there is a team available that would actually benefit the conference.

I am just saying with Ga Southern and App State you get two programs that have a swagger that says, " Don't come here unless you plan on winning championships". That sounds easy, but it takes many years of winning to build that level of confidence, swagger, attitude and "we will not accept losing" within the program. Bama has it, Florida has gained it in the last 10 years, Southern Cal has it but not many more after that. The Sunbelt needs some attitude and swagger. Too many schools that seem to be going through the motions and not really improving. Troy is the only school that has met or exceeded expectations and given where they started from they have more than held their own. The fact that they have won 5 or 6 SB titles in a row is indicitive the the SB has not really improved much. In reality, the SB took a small step back last year. I like the SB, but many schools are dead weight and treading water at best. Time for some new blood that knows how to win. Winning breeds winning and the SB needs some of its members to win big OOC games to build confidence within the conference.

Hey man I said good things about Troy. And Troy kind of knows how to win championships as they did win a couple of division II titles.
In fact, don't they currently proudly advertise those Div II national titles on their scoreboard?

Let me tell you something about swagger.
When you are playing 12 games a year against teams that are bigger, stronger, faster, deeper, and more experienced than yours is then swagger can quickly become frustration. And frustration can quickly become disillusionment. And disillusionment can quickly become apathy.
Believe me or don't.
