Made me think about us losing to the tear drop
When Bozeman hit the shot I couldn't help think about the feeling North Texas must have had that UALR experienced against the infamous killer last second tear drop by UNO to lose the championship in 96. I know this...it was nice driving back to Little Rock hearing ESPN Radio making the Sunbelt championship game the highlight of the show. They had a clip of Ray Tucker's call of the final 7 seconds of the game. UALR played a good defensive game...both teams did..nothing came easy for either team.

Can someone find a copy of that clip?

I might leave some details out of what I remeber exactly but UNO always had good teams like UALR did in the mid-nineties. They had several that went on the to NBA one a guy by the name of Ervin Johnson who was a post player. They always had great talent in those days before falling off in the last 10 years. UALR in my mind had there best team ever including the team that beat Notre Dame in 86a with Derek Fisher, Malik Dixon, Muntrelle Dobbins, Joe Stephens etc. UALR led most of the game similar to North Texas in this game if I remember correctly...Barton Colesium was packed with curious non-hardcore Trojan fans just to see if UALR could actually win the championship and head to the dance. I think at the time we were something like 24-5 heading into that game and defeated Miss. State at M.S. on a last second tip in by Derrick Creighton (Miss. State went on to the final four that year)....It was a tight nip and tuck game just like last night and UNO had two great guard and their point guard Reggie Garris took the ball at half court with just a few seconds left in the game with UALR leading by one and he drove the lane to about 6' in front of the rim and scooped up an underhanded shot that seemed to go 10' in the air above the goal and went straight down through the net and the buzzer sounded and Trojan fans were devastated like never before seen in the history of the program.

I'm trying not to cry when I recall that moment. However, some of us remember the last second shot by Eric Hightower of Georgia Southern to beat us in Barton Coloseum when Ron Kestenbaum was our coach. I was just there as an observer that night so it didn't hurt near as bad as the UNO loss after I had become a die hard Trojan fans years later.

Fish got his lunch eaten on that play. That guy went around him as General Patton said, "like crap through a goose." Back then, Doc could have guarded him better. And Fish was our best defender.

The sad part was that when the guy started around Fish, we had another player (I think it was Rod Smith) who had plenty of time to step out and cut off the player, but he didn't move. Terrible day for UALR.03-melodramatic

RE: Made me think about us losing to the tear drop
It's funny that we have been talking about the McNear gal driving uncontested to the basket. At the time of the N.O disaster, my question was and still is to this day, where was the help? It was understandable that most any player could spin around Fisher who couldn't afford to foul him. But, no one slid over to stop the drive to the basket.

All that said, I sure as heck don't understand how anyone can question the ability of Joe Foley to coach basketball. Seems to me Joe is not that concerned about individual battles. It's the War he intends to win. His record speaks for itself.

There was a player behind Fish, who instead of sliding over and blocking penetration, he moved in the opposite direction. Haven't been able to figure that out in all these years. Watch it again and see what I'm talking about.03-banghead

Oh, that just makes me cringe remembering that day. But, the sadness is tempered by the joy of our victory. And, you know, Derek has had plenty of huge moments since that game. Who knows where that UNO guy ended up. Bitter...maybe a little. :)

I went to the Pep Rally today. It was great. Matt missed it because he was in class. Hopefully, he will get to celebrate our next victory in Houston.

Shannon, sorry I missed seeing you there. Did pick up my NCAA tee-shirts.
