White House to celebrate Motown with tribute concert

The White House will celebrate Black History Month with a Feb. 24 concert celebrating Detroit's best-known musical import. President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama will host "The Motown Sound: In Performance at the White House," a tribute to therecord companyBerry Gordy Jr. founded here at the dawn of the 1960s.

The concert will be filmed for broadcast at 8 p.m. March 1 on PBS stations.

Announced performers include just one from Motown's classic era: Smokey Robinson. The rest of the roster are contemporary artists Natasha Bedingfield, Sheryl Crow, Jamie Foxx, Gloriana, Nick Jonas, Ledisi, John Legend, Amber Riley, Mark Salling, Seal and Jordin Sparks. Detroiter Greg Phillinganes will serve as music director.

Earlier in the day Feb. 24,Michelle Obama will host a workshop on Motownat the White House for more than 100 students from Michigan, four other states and the District of Columbia. Titled "The Sound of Young America: The Historyof Motown," it will be moderated by Grammy Museum executive director Bob Santelli and includemany of the concert's performers discussing how Motown came about in Detroit and its legacy during the last 50 years.The discussionwill stream live on http://www.whitehouse.gov,

This is absolutely wonderful news because now that the economy has been fixed, the wars ended, terrorism stopped, and the immigration problem solved we can all get down to relaxed and casual business.

All in all, this is very silly, and it's indicative of a president who has no idea to where he's supposed to lead the US.

I like that he hasn't closed Gitmo. He extended the tax cuts, and he seems committed to a new era of nuclear power.

Seriously, I thought this thread would be about another country filled with protestors. Obama throwing a party. Hmm. I guess the Mayans were right. Better sell all your stocks now. Just let me know so I can sell first.

I don't mind that he's throwing a party.... my problem is the people I've heard on the entertainment list.

Is Berry Gordy even attending? I can't imagine that he and any living members from "the glory days" wouldn't, but I haven't heard that.

Ham, I don't think it's just this one party because I hear that most nights at the WH are party time. But how much party time should a president have when people are losing their jobs, homes, retirement savings, etc? The guy has lost touch.

Sheryl Crow is from close enough to Memphis to have some Soul credentials and she is one HOT 50 year old. She can come to my party anytime.
