Who are favored for this weekend's event?

I believe the EMU men are not up to their usual standards, but believe the EMU women are coming on very strong this year.

On the women's side UT will dominate the distance events and Amanda Kaverman is one of the better sprinters in the league. If we score some points in the jumps UT could be top three- favorites? Hard to say-I wish I knew more about the rest of the league.

Athlete of the Meet favorite has to be Ari Fisher, though. As I noted on our board she just ran a MAC record 5K, has a top ten in the WORLD time and broke the UT record and lost out on West Athlete of the Week to a runner who had the best 800 in the MAC in three years and is 18th in the nation- that's right, the nation. Not tenth in world but 18th in the nation. Go figure- Fisher is peaking nicely and could win a couple events.

The NIU women could nab a few points in a couple events.. that's about it.

Unrelated, but the Big East recently held their Indoor T&F Championships @ the Univ. of Akron

Buffalo will dominate the throwing events like in years past, especially the shot put.

Kent had the throwers when I was competing- Al Schotterman and JAcques Acambray (sp?), both Olympians I believe, in the hammer, Schotterman for the US and Acambray for France. They may have been 1-2 in the nation at one point- They were some huge guys for the time and Schotterman in particular was very fast. Central had Bruno Pauletto, an Olympian putter from Canada. BTW, it appears by looking at their website that BG has a nice indoor T&F facility.

Seating? Not good from what I've seen. Some of the events take place on the football practice field and I don't recall ever seeing seats there. On the track side there isn't much room- Haven't been there in awhile but I don't recall any bleachers there either but there may be some. Not like Eastern's (old?) track where they had seats above the track, as I recall (I'm going back to the mid 70s here ).

Bah...Crawford's 100 gold was fluke...McTear and Williams were hurt and Borzov was distracted by the KGB...

You're right about EMU.

They hold indoors events at Bowen field house with balcony seating.

The finish line is almost right under the balcony.

I'd guess it seats probably 1,000.

Bah...The USA hockey team's win over the Soviets in the 1980 Olympics was also a fluke.

Bah...Boise State's victory over Oklahoma in the Fiesta Bowl was also a fluke.

Bah...Butler would never have won two out of three versus most of their opponents in the NCAA Tourney last year. Ergo, a fluke.

The 80 Olympics? Yes, that would have been a fluke if Fetisov, Tretiak (yeah...he was pulled for Myshkin, I know) and Mikhailov had not played for Russia...

Similarly...Boise State and Butler didn't beat teams that had their best players at home. Crawford beat a field decimated by injury...his win was more analgous to TYrell Biggs super heavyweight gold medal in boxing over a field that didn't include Teofilo Stevenson of Cuba (boycott) than any of the legitimate wins you listed

Getting back to the subject at hand:

is there ample seating at BG for tomorrow and Saturday's event?

BTW, the events are underway:

BG's women scored BIG big at the weight throw scoring 15 points to 6 for the runner up school..(BG had 3 women place, including the winner).

As I understand it, field events are such an odd collection of events that one school might do well at the throws and another at the jumps. Also some schools are not competitive at the mult-event events (the athlete does multiple T&F events).

EMU's women, e.g., will do poorly I believe in the throws but very well in the jumps (e.g., triple, long and pole vault). Then, of course, there are the track events.

Ari finished I believe 4th in the 5K in a big upset.

I believe this championship is wide open.

EMU will be strong tomorrow in a number of the track events.

If I 'had' to pick a team to come from behind and win, it would be EMU. EMU could pick up a lot of points in the 200m dash.

EMU's women have completely run away with the 2nd day with some truly excellent track performance.

In one event, 200m dash, I believe of 8 scorers, EMU picked up #1, #4 and #5 for a total of 19 points in ONE event (scoring is 10-8-6-5-4-3-2-1).

In the men, it is between the two N.E. Ohio schools in a very close contest.

Pretty exciting meet- Ari Fisher, who has dominated in distance this year, was clearly a fatigued runner. She did pull out a second in the 3,000 but it was a tough two days for her. Hopefully, she'll recover in time for nationals. Akron beat Kent for the men's title. Saw a couple good performances and the answer to your original question, EMU Steve, is "No, the seating totally reeks!".

I suspected fatique for a dominant runner.

RE seating: I've been to a few indoor meets and from what I could see from the website BG's field house didn't look like any of those.

BTW, NIU will host the outdoors even though they don't have a men's program???

Too bad EMU couldn't host - excellent facilities (Rynearson - 30K seats ) and, of course, a 'central' location in the middle of the MAC footprint.
