OT -- Rice alumnus hosts Obama and technocrati elite
It should be noted that Rice alumnus and venture capitalist John Doerr hosted Obama and a dozen key Bay Area technology leaders last night at his home. You're not doing badly when the US President comes over for dinner along with the who's who of Silicon Valley.

Rice alums supporting this guy in this manner isn't something for their fellow alums to be proud of IMHO.

Eh, I'm a steadfast Republican, but I don't have a problem with Doerr doing this at all -- in fact I think it's commendable that a Rice grad has risen to such a position of prominence that the President is asking for his views. Frankly, I think Obama needs to spend more time with the investment community and business community because he hasn't had prior experience/familiarity with them.

Thanks for speaking for all fellow alums, but maybe, just maybe, they are some that don't have a problem with it.

I think the acronym "IMHO," i.e. In my humble opinion, means he was speaking only for himself. Given this Administration's hostility to business, I disagree with business leaders, even Rice alums, who support the President's policies. But it is a free country and I respect their political beliefs.

How did you know that is what was meant by my use of "IMHO"? I guess that is what 35+ years of friendship will do.

Indeed. If only we had an alum who had risen to, say, Cabinet level and who actually help set national policy. Now that would be someone that all alumni would be extremely proud of, regardless of the person's views or the policies that result.

BTW, the guy in front of me at the will call window tonight at the Memphis game said his name was John Doerr. He may have been kidding but maybe it was the same guy?

I don't think President Obama is asking for Doerr's views. He is asking for campaign contributions from Doerr and his friends.

I just hope he is giving an equivalent amount to the RNC, because IMHO Doerr is betting on the wrong horse in 2012.
