Big Ten Statement on Expansion
http://www.bigten.org/genrel/120510aaa.html

Quote:Dec. 5, 2010

The Big Ten Council of Presidents/Chancellors (COP/C) held its winter meetings today in Park Ridge, Illinois. The following statement is issued by the Big Ten office on behalf of the COP/C.

This time last year, the COP/C believed that the time was right for the conference to explore the possibility of conference expansion and Commissioner James E. Delany was asked to provide recommendations for consideration over the next 12 to 18 months. The Big Ten began a thorough, deliberate evaluation and on June 11, 2010, the COP/C unanimously approved an application for membership from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. Since that announcement, the conference has been actively engaged in incorporating Nebraska, both academically and athletically, into the fabric of the conference and all parties eagerly await the completed integration which will take effect in July, 2011.

During today's meeting it was decided that it was appropriate to focus completely on conference affairs at this time. "We have been thoroughly engaged in the process since last December," said COP/C Chair and Indiana University President Michael McRobbie. "Following detailed discussions at today's meeting, my colleagues and I can report that we believe that this process has reached its natural conclusion. We are pleased with the addition of Nebraska and look forward to working with our colleagues there in the years ahead."

Although the conference will continue to monitor the intercollegiate landscape, it will not be actively engaged in conference expansion for the foreseeable future and does not expect to be proactively seeking new members.

The Big East no longer needs to worry about expansion out of fear of being raided (at least by the Big Ten). And given the instability swirling around the Big IIX, I'd say we're not going to be raided at all.

Are the Big 12 up on deck?

You figure their main targets will be Big East schools, and maybe UCF (Flordia expansion???) IMO.

I wonder what they can offer a BE school?? Any takers?

Now that this is official, let's see if Marinatto tries to keep the heat on Nova to elevate, or does he let off the expansion pedal? What he does/says next could be very telling as to what has been driving force behind the current plan. Fear of being raided? -or- Desire for a media rights contract that gives the league long-term stability?

Cheers,
Neil

I really don't see the appeal of the Big IIX for any Big East team and do not consider them a real threat in the same way as the Big Ten (and by extension, the SEC).

In terms of $$$, the Big East is closer to an even distribution than at any point in its history.

In the Big IIX, there's a wider gap between the Top 3 and the rest of the league than ever.

In the Big East, you're only behind ND in terms of power and influence, if that sort of thing is important to you.

If you join the the Big IIX, you're behind Texas, Oklahoma, and A&M.

Only real benefit is that they are a true all-sports conference whereas the Big East is not.

Cheers,
Neil

Thank you. That's what I was saying in the other thread about this.

RE: Big Ten Statement on Expansion
Just ignore them. They're angry non-Big East fans who are upset that we're expanding and that they can't use the "Big Ten will raid you" excuse. So I guess the Big 12 is their lame target now, though I wonde how they can explain Kansas, Kansas State, and Iowa State negotiating entering the conference if the Big 12 is such a big expansion force.

I never heard KU say they were negotiating? The only school that would make sense would be Louisville or maybe Cincinnati.

It was stated during that summer that Kansas was negotiating with us and last week Bill Self confirmed it. Meanwhile, Louisville and Cincinnati were interested in the Big 12 if the Big East didn't expand. Not only is the Big East expanding but the Big East has an aggressive plan right now so I'm sure Louisville and Cincinnati don't care what the Big 12 is up to.

RE: Big Ten Statement on Expansion
No one has any idea if the Big XII is even considering expansion. Their public posture has obviously been the exact opposite.

If they were to consider expansion, it would only be to get bigger markets as part of the conference to enrich their TV contract because outside the state of Texas, that is the biggest problem they have. Most of the candidates that have been proposed don't help them at all with any of that. A counter raid on the Pac Ten to go after the Arizona schools would make more sense than anything I've read so far other than BYU.

RE: Big Ten Statement on Expansion
I agree Bill. If they expand I would think that BYU is a lock, then they would try and take a Pac-12 school (which won't work) and Arkansas (which won't work) and a Big East team (which won't work). As someone said, I can't remember who, the Big 12's only options are the remaining MWC schools and C-USA.

Big 12's posture is that there hasn't been as much support for a championship game, so there is no need for 12. All schools will receive increased TV revenue because ABC and FSN are not decreasing their rights fees or television windows while they will be at 10 teams (approx $1.5 million more per team).

RE: Big Ten Statement on Expansion
If Big 12 is expanding without us getting any of the 3/4 schools linked to the Big East, then they should go get BYU and Boise and be done with it. BYU and their tv deal will help take less money to get in, and Boise would just take anything to get in at this rate.

Memphis would be a good option if Louisville declines.

Wow, that's VERY interesting. That is the reason why the Big 12 doesn't want to add another team unless it's someone like Arkansas. Big 12 basketball isn't affected by Colorado and Nebraska leaving and they still have Texas and Oklahoma so they would still be more then happy to pay out the money. And they don't have to worry about the Big 12 trying to get a raise so now they have money to throw at the Big East, or sit on their current deals.

Another reason ABC and FSN confirmed this revenue level for the Big 12 was that the conference went to nine conference games in football and round-robin play in basketball.

And its not new that the Big 12 wasn't enamored with a championship game. A few years ago, their coaches (?) sent a recommendation to their ADs to go to nine conference games and ditch the championship game. TV was also interested in this because the Big 12 had not been scheduling quality OOC games that ABC & FSN could pick up. At the time, the ADs or presidents voted to decline the recommendation.

So, in a way, the Big 12 being raided actually helped them financially since they slimmed down and spread the money around. Unbelievable.
