Looks like we got the athletic guard we've been wanting
DeAndre and Chuckie are both quick, athletic, can handle the ball, and can shoot. Not much more you can ask for- other than their being 6-3 or 6-4. The kid I saw last week, Reggie Fondren, is a legite 6-2 or 6-3 and will be a good addition next season. I don't have a problem with DeAndre and Chuckie splitting time at the point with one of them moving to the 2 guard occassionally. Our guard rotation seems pretty solid with those two and Solo. I said before the season that Matt would get 15-20 minutes off the bunch and that's about where he is. He may lose some of those minutes if Chucky keeps improving, but I still think he'll be a factor off the bench before its all said and done..

Not if he plays 13 minute and gets 5 shots. You know as well as I do that shooters need a lot of shots. How would Chas do with 5 shots a night? It's just stupid. I don't care how good the other guards are, on a consistent basis, not can hold a candle shooting to Matt. Granted Chucky made some shots tonight and Solo has had games where he hit some shots, but in others Solo has gone "0 for". But it's always been LRTrojan and I who have see the potential in Matt that isn't being utilized regularly. Everyone else has always pointed out his shortcomings, which aren't many. But what will be will be and as long as Steve is calling the shots, Solo will play 30 or more minutes a game, and Matt will sit on the bench waiting for them to throw him a bone. Pitiful.

I call myself watching a player on both sides of the ball. I personally don't see a lot of difference in Solo and Matt. Solo is quicker, but I think Matt makes up for some of that with his savvy as a kid that's been a student of the game, since he may not have the God given ability as a lot of kids have. Both are good free throw shooters. Matt is the better perimeter shooter in my opinion. I don't see a lot of difference in their defense. I've never thought Solo is as great as some of these on this board do. I think he's an average player at best, and not close to being an All-Conference player. And Matt is an average player. Both have things they can do that help the team. Neither could start for a decent Western Kentucky team. That's why we can't win conference tournaments.

He'll always be a factor until we get another proven 3-point shooter. But as our guard talent improves, his minutes may decrease some.

Only one poster thinks Matt is an All-Conference player. LRTrojan seems a lot more equivocal about Matt's talent level. Everyone likes Matt. We all think he is a good player. We're thrilled he came to UALR. We appreciate all he's done. I just don't think there's a conspiracy against him playing more minutes. In fact, only one player has averaged considerably more minutes than he has. I also believe, all things being equal, Steve would play him more than other players for a number of reasons- he's local, he's a great story, he's a fan favorite, and (I don't know how to say this in a politically correct manner) he's white. And I don't at all buy the argument that his former walk-on status is held against him. He was a recruited walkon, he didn't just drop down on our campus and he is now a scholarship player no different than anyone else.

Matt is the type of player who will always help a team, because he has good basketball instincts and can shoot very well. However, there may be other good shooters who can run faster and jump higher. A good-shooting senior is going to get his chances.

I can't say who is or who isn't an all conference player. That's not my job to determine. I only want to see this kid get the playing time he has earned (not deserved, earned) over the past three seasons.
Now in defense of the coaches, we have to remember he was out for months with his broken foot, and it hasn't been too long since he was cleared for playing, so his conditioning can't be 100% yet. They see him in practice every day, and it could be his conditioning is more responsible for his reduced playing time then his abilities.
Any way, this is just something to talk about. If we weren't talking about Matt, we'd be talking about something else or someone else.
I'm just happy we've gotten some wins over some good opponents, and our new players are looking like we've recruited well. So life is good.
