With a pretty good year underway, BCS teams may come a calling. Do you think we can keep him for the long term?

Looking at SIU's message board they seem rather obsessed with this issue. There are a couple of threads just stating good programs for Kill to go to. Seems like they should be more concerned with an under-performing Saluki squad.

If he leaves (God forbid), he will take his entire coaching staff with him. Time to double or triple your HASF donations, boys.

Just once I would like to see a good coach stay when other schools come calling.

It depends on what the other schools are. I'm fine with a coach jumping to, say, the Big Ten or the Big 12. I don't like the idea of a Brady Hoke-scenario, where the coach leaves a MAC school for another non-AQ school. To me, we need to be able to fight off that challenge, but we'll never be able to match BCS school money.

I think the possibility of Kill getting offers increases exponentially if NIU runs the table @ 12 -2. A loss in the MAC championship or the bowl game could temper other program's excitement. I think the thing to remember is that Kill hasn't been here long enough to be winning with his own guys... The upperclassmen are still Novak recruits. How much does this factor come into play in a BCS school's new search for a coach?

If he leaves this quickly, it makes NIU look like an attractive job to some other up & comer. Who wouldn't want to come in and coach Chandler Harnish and Cameron Bell at Soldier Field?

I don't think he goes. One season does not make for major offers and he lost some winnable games this year including Iowa State and Illinois. Plus many schools want instant gratification, the Kill program as we've seen takes several years to materialized. Many programs are not that patient.

Hmm, live in Muncie Indiana or San Diego CA, given the choice, I choose San Diego.

I don't think it matters to them one bit. Butch Jones at CMU had an easy path to success that was setup by Brian Kelly's recruits and Dan Lefevour having a beast of a career. He then got the Cincy job.

The good thing is that Kill doesn't have any ties to any Big 10/12 programs. He doesn't seem like he would want to leave the Midwest/Plains at age 50 either so I'd assume the only job offers he would even consider would be in one of those two conferences.

I would consider Novak a good coach. I don't remember any specific names but I thought there were some BCS schools sniffing around after 2003.

It would take a quantum leap in HASF donations to match the salaries offered by BCS schools. Even so, I don't think we can compete on other factors such as tradition, fan base, and national exposure.

Urban Meyer left BG after 2 seasons for Utah.
Left Utah after 2 season for Florida.

I don't think Novak had any offers because of his age.

I may be nieve on this but I think our job is the perfect fit for Coach Kill.
As we have seen, leaving a good fit does not always work out (see Colorado) etc. Plus I think Coach Kill is a little too football coach for some of these bigger programs. I think they look for the matinee idol look. But, better yet don't worry about it and enjoy the ride.

We need to find 10 donors willing to pony up $200,000 a year like SMU did.

Kill has a window of opportunity that is wide open right now. If his professional goal is to coach in a major conference, he will go if the right offer comes along. I have no doubt that it will. In three years, he basically reversed the 2-10 record that we had the year before he was hired. Plus, he went to bowl games the first two years while building to a conference title match this year. I think that this may be the move that splits up his coaching staff though as one of his top assistants would likely be considered for the NIU job, and others may wind up as coordinators at other BSC schools.

While '07 was a bad year. We were much more talented than our record would indicate at 2-10. Too many injuries to count that year.

Considering Gary Patterson hasn't left TCU, I don't see Kill leaving NIU anytime soon.

Not to mention we're redshirting 40+ players this year.
