The stands are a lot shorter on the south and west sides than they are on the west side. The south and east sides' top row is at ground level, while the west side's stands rise well above ground. I would guess (if the place was absolutely packed) that about 20,000 of the capacity 30,199 would not be seen on camera unless they ran a reverse shot.
I'm not saying that there were that many people there, because I wasn't there last night, but what gets on camera is the short side of the stadium with probably less than half as many rows as the west side has.
Indeed, the biggest problem at CMU, and most MAC stadiums, is that most fans sit on the home side, which is not normally shown unless the cameras do a full pan. (as Net indicates at CMU).
As indicated, the CMU students were in the endzone and wrapped along the east side.
My take is that CMU could have a crowd of say 18K and the east stands could still be mostly empty because they would hold visiting fans and WMU didn't appear to bring too many last night.
Hate to bring up EMU in regard to attendance but the attendance on the West side of Rynearson is usually say 5 or 6 or 7 x the attendance on the East side, depending how many visiting team fans attend (more visitor fans for Army, CMU, UT, etc.).
If one looks at the EMU Football page and in the upper left hand corner, one will see a crowd shot from the '09 Army game. (that crowd shot does not show any students - they are seated on the West side but at the North end (by the football building) That crowd density would have entended pretty well along the entire West side stands with some thinning down by the Convo end of the West stands.

Very impressive West stand crowd, yet maybe 3K or 4 (max) on the East side.
This website, probably the 5th story, has a great crowd shot from an Army game (don't know if it was '09 or '10).
