TROY – Four players off last year’s Troy defense won’t be returning next season and a fifth has been suspended for a violation of NCAA policy, head coach Larry Blakeney said.

R.J. Roberts, a rising junior defensive end from Enterprise, will have to miss the next season because of an unspecified NCAA rules violation, Blakeney said. Roberts came to Troy as a walk-on in 2007, missed 2008 because of academics and made 14 tackles last season. He was to challenge for a starting spot this year.

The four who are no longer with the program are rising sophomore defensive tackle James Searcy and a trio of redshirt freshmen – defensive end Antonio Harper, cornerback Sergio Perez and safety Mike Robinson.

“(Scholarships) are a one-year deal,” Blakeney said. “All of those guys were non-performers academically, attendance-wise and on the field and it all carried over.”

The defense lost rising senior Eugene Kinlaw before spring practice and the current depth chart lists 10 players who were not with the program last season.

One projected starter is defensive tackle Tony Davis, a redshirt sophomore who played in five games last season. His backups are redshirt freshman Aaron Williams and true freshman Tommy Stephens.

“Tony’s a smart guy with good technique,” Blakeney said. “He’s probably not big enough but he’ll work hard. Same with Aaron. He’s just a pup.”
Rising junior Sidell Corley, thought to be a starter, has slid to third on the depth chart behind seniors Emmanuel Dudley and Riley Flowers.

“There’s nothing wrong with him, he’s just got to work a little harder and play a little better,” Blakeney said. “He’s still a young kid and we’ve got high hopes for him.”

The two starters at defensive end are senior Mario Addison and sophomore Jonathan Massaqoui. The backups are little-used junior Brandon Boudreaux and three new kids in freshmen John Clark, J.R. Robertson and Adrian Mack.

At linebacker, sophomore Jacoby Thomas has moved from middle linebacker to the weakside, where he’ll challenge junior Donnell Golden and redshirt freshman Johnny Thompson to replace Bear Woods.

True freshmen Dionte Ponder, Joe Lofton, Chris Pickett and Cam Hudson are listed on the depth chart in the secondary.

Blakeney said coaches are still looking for help on the recruiting trail for guys who can come in and play next season.

I was thinking that this season would be close between Troy and MTSU. Off the field issues can have very bad effects on the field. Right now, I have to give MTSU the edge.

Anyone from Troy have more detailed information on what these guys were doing? Or what they weren't?

Its always unfortunate when this happens to any university 03-banghead it seems this has happened more this off season than usual or maybe i'm just paying more attention to the news. regardless i'm glad to see the coaches taking a stand and doing what is best for the program rather than what's best for the boosters.

Hell,

Ill take every advantage I can get against Troy. Thevye simply owned FAU's arse except for 2007.

MTSU would appear to have vaulted into the preseason favorite lead with this news.

This wouldn't change the preseason conference favorite in my opinion. Only two were even going to contribute this season and that would be in a back up role.

The bigger problem is these kids may have thrown away their only opportunity at an education. That is what is sometimes forgotten in these things. Kind of makes you wonder what the high schools are doing for these kids.

I figured the first post about it would come from the UL fans. There beat writer retweeted it almost immediately last night.

Sorry, you have to deal with that Troy fans.

We all have those players that think the rules don't apply to them. I'm just glad we are getting rid of the ones that think that way. I do wish them the best of luck in life though.

One question I had is that he mentioned this was related to JUCO and oversinging, but from what I read of the article I didnt see that any of the ones discussed were JUCO's.

Were any of them?

Is Hutton really a journalist? He sounds a lot like a message board clown like the rest of us. He is the same man that thought it was cute for the FAU to refuse to move from the center of the field for Troy to do its pregame prayer circle. Actually forcing FAU to have walk through the Troy circle to get off of the field. We all know how that turned out. Levi setting records while sitting out moe of the 4th quarter.

Yup,

He does articles all the time for FAU that are much more profesional and factual. Those are located on the sports page of the Sentinel. The blog that most of us read and look at has a playground mentalitiy IMHO. Fun to read and occasionaly some facts, but most often a creative outlet for him.

I mean Blogs are just that arent they? Pretty much free to talk about whatever the hell you want to talk about.

To each his own I guess. I'm glad that Drew conducts himself in a far more professional manner. (on and off the blog)

Antonio Harper was a transfer from one of the military prep schools. I believe that he was the only one...but, by far, Roberts and Searcy are the biggest losses. Two less to chase QBs...03-hissyfit

RE: FB: 4 Trojans off the team, 1 suspended for a year.
Sergio Perez and Mike Robinson were way down the depth chart, so losing them isn't a big issue. RJ Roberts and James Searcy provided a little bit of depth. At least they weren't projected starters this season. It's seems like Troy will still be okay imo.

Quote:DREW CHAMPLIN: Of the other four, the only real loss is Searcy from an athletic standpoint. But you’ve got to go to class and you’ve got to go to weights. When you don’t do that, your scholarships don’t get renewed. Antonio Harper can be officially labeled a bust now, since he was a 4-star guy and listed on rivals.com at 6-foot-4, 230. He’s really 6-foot-1, 205, if that. Robinson and Perez were marginal recruits, but Searcy was highly-rated in the 2008 class.

Quote:DREW CHAMPLIN: The defensive backs will probably end up being fine, but some new guys like JUCO transfer LaDarrius Madden and probably 2-3 true freshmen, if not more, will have to provide depth or play on special teams.

I think the linebacker group will be fine. It’s the defensive line that should scare you for now. It’s a good thing most teams in the league are pass-happy like Troy.
